America’s top ten local talk show hosts: #10 – Michael Berry/Houston

by editor on July 18, 2011

Michael Berry
“The Czar of Texas Radio”
NewsRadio KPRC/Houston 2-5 pm
News Radio 740 KTRH/Houston 5-7 pm

Our countdown to #1 begins today.

In what is perhaps the ultimate talk show compliments, Michael Berry was recommended for this list by one of his direct competitors.

He may be the only host on this list busier than Dana Loesch. In addition to hosting popular talk-shows on two Houston radio stations, he’s a city councilman, mayor pro tempore, and an attorney. (Berry’s show has also been picked up by stations in San Antonio and Portland, Oregon but so far he hasn’t run for mayor of those cities.)

According to the Houston Chronicle he makes it a “practice to provoke” and is a “love-him-or-hate-him” kind of guy. Berry says his show is a “controversial discussion of issues” where listeners “discuss openly what they typically think but can’t say.”

Here’s a little flavor of Michael Berry: “If you’re against apologizing for slavery, then you gotta be against giving welfare to the American Indians because of the fact that 200 years ago, they were whipped in a war. We conquered them. That’s history. Hello!”

Listen to Michael live 2-5 and 5-7 pm CST or catch his podcasts any damn time you want.

When is the last time he stopped shouting? He’s got some good points, but a little temper-control would do a lot to get his message through.

Just saying.

Well now Mr. Berry that was both entertaining and enlightening…

Maybe Sen. Graham should quit looking for what he thinks is the middle way since that way seems to have shifted far left…

Who’s Graham pandering to in his state?

I really enjoyed this Mr. A and Mr. E, I’ve actually heard this guy before, but I can’t pin it down the where or when.

He’s filled in for Levin on occasion — I’ve enjoyed him enough to sign up for his mailing list.

Thanks perlcat, now I know where I’ve heard him before, you’re exactly right!

My comment was hidden because of poor ratings?!? Ouch, that hurt!
I never said I disagreed with mr. Berry. Maybe it’s because I’m European, but shouting into a microphone really doesn’t get the message through, on the contrary. (And no, I’m not even French!)

We don’t have talk-radio the way you do. It’s prolly a cultural difference, but shouting like mr. Berry does, would get him off the air in a matter minutes over here.
He could just as easily calmly made his point, that way I wouldn’t have clicked out out of his segment in 30 seconds flat.

But like I suggested, it’s likely a cultural thing, I didn’t mean to dis the man.

Then I guess you wouldn’t like Mark Levin either, and he’s one of my favorites. Take your European Mr. Nice Guy attitudes and go back to Europe. We have emotions here, and if the man wants to shout, he has that right. I feel sorry for Europe if having emotions isn’t allowed there.

I have no doubts that his passion is not always understood. However, the role of a talk show host is to entertain, motivate, and inspire. If everyone on talk radio acted like those schmucks on ‘Meat The Depressed”, nobody would listen.

The subjects that Berry and Levin cover are things that demand passion. I can’t tell you how happy I am when Levin says: “Get off the phone, ya big dope!”

This level of passion is a people mover — it motivates us to action well before things reach a point where we have to arm ourselves and march on Washington to fix things. That is the whole point. Otherwise, we sit there like the frog in the boiling water, wondering when we need to get off our collective asses and fix this mess. If you Europeans did this as well, things wouldn’t go so far downhill as to to demand Greece-style rioting.

These guys aren’t ranting. Berry & Levin are extremely intelligent people, and the things they get upset about are on the right track, fully yell-worthy subjects.

Mike. You would really hate Pissy Chrissy Matthews. He shouts so much he spits all over the camera. At least he did the few minutes that I watched him about 8 years ago.

Get him of the air in a couple of minutes! You poor people don’t know the first thing about freedom of speech, all you know about is license of speech or what the bloatocrats tell you is freedom of speech. You need a revolution to assert your rights and take the bloatocrats down! Hell, for that matter, so do we!

Precisely! And we could use a little less civility in the halls of Congress, too. Maybe of more good men stood up and called out the lies of the left in open session, they could get the lying toned down a bit.

Living in Houston and a regular listener to Michael Berry a few corrections to your article. He is no longer on the city council or Mayor Pro Tem. Five years ago he didn’t know anything about radio so he took over as station manager fired people who got in his way then took over. He soon went from a morning show to 5 hours split between two different Clear Channel channels. He for the most part is a far right wing bomb thrower who hates any form of government except the Military which he never managed to serve in. He loves the police in a city where police corruption is at an all time high with videos of police beating. Enough said.

criminals getting beating on video doesn’t necessarily mean corruption…they probably deserved it

Hey, uh, Keith. Could you provide some links to the videos of the criminals being beaten? I love watching that kind of thing.

Michael Berry speaks the truth, he says what most people are thinking but to PC to say. I have listened to him for a long time and he is the BEST radio host around!

Listen to Michael for a week and you’ll be hooked. I listen to him even when I’m on the road through their website 950 Radio Mojo.

Congrats to Mr. Berry, but I’d rate him even higher. He really gets down to the root of an issue and if someone deserves to be mocked and ridiculed he’s not afraid to announce it to the world (i.e., CONGRESSWOMAN Sheila Jackson Lee, President Pookie, etc.). Some callers will say he is “racist” but I’ve never heard anything come close to it – some people will take offense at things he says, but that is because the truth hurts. :)

I was not a big Michael Berry fan when he took over my favorit comedic host many years back in Houston, however due to the topics he covers and what they cover and what he discusses regarding them, he has been a person that I miss on the weekends and I actually dread the days he has to take off or when the Astros Play. (Being from Houston I love the Astros, But I prefer to listen to Michael) He makes his beliefs extremely clear and even though some of those may be against things I am or have done in the past, they have NEVER been incorrect among the majority. Because you dont happen to believe what he is saying because you were in a potential situation, means that you are the exception, not the rule. I love that about him.

Michael Berry should not be called the “Czar of Texas Talk Radio!” NOOOOOOOOO…..He should be called the “God of Texas Talk Radio!” Michael is the best thing that ever happened to talk radio. He will surpass Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity one of these days, and when he does, I’m going to shout, “HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES BOY?” (just like I did to the triple-crowned-weaved one at last months gay pride parade, (I know….I know….but I was supportting a friend visiting me from SoCal). HOUSTON, IT’S THAT TIME…..LOCK AND LOAD!!!! We love Michael Berry!!!

Michael’s show is actually far better than can be illustrated in that short clip. He is inspiring to conservatives and quite dismissive of those who would remain the “silent majority”. In his views, there is no virtue to being tacit for a conservative.

If you are a liberal, PLEASE call his show, he will ask reasoned questions that will leave you looking pretty simple…and wrong. It entertains those of us that listen immensly.
