This may go down as the first pre-emptive toss under the bus strikes in political history.

The Hill reports that “Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) last Friday hinted at who’s to blame if Democrats lose tomorrow’s Massachusetts Senate special election. With polls showing Brown pulling ahead, Frank told reporters Attorney General Martha Coakley (D) should have campaigned harder for the seat.”

Frank also predicted that a victory by Coakley’s Republican opponent Scott Brown would “kill the health bill.”

Apparently, this is a very common comment by Democrats this week as a newly released campaign ad in the Massachusetts senate race states that Brown “wants to be the deciding vote to kill Ted Kennedy’s legislation.”

Republican strategists suggest that the official Democratic party line will be that Coakley just wasn’t a strong enough candidate, but they all expected that announcement to take place after a failed election, not before.

We expect the trend to accelerate. In fact, Democrat candidates in the 2010 mid-terms should begin lining up now so they can be thrown under the bus as soon as possible.
