California no longer requiring eighth graders to take Algebra. They will teach them the new California math. If Mr. Jones makes $250,000 per year and Jerry Brown and Obama tax the snot out of him does he have any money left?

Why require anyone to study a subject which is not needed to cash a welfare check?

Yes, & I’ll tell you something you won’t wanna hear. We should scap public education & go into a for profit school system. The results we would get compaired to the butt stupid kids that come out of our schools that can barely read, could find themselves on a map without a “you are here” thing on it, & who cannot think rationally or problem solve. Then you can cut property taxes used to finance puplic education & use it for sh!t that works. Instead of public employees, most of whom are redundent.

Every heard of vouchers? The school of choice gets the government money. A side benefit would be when the public school systems starts losing billions they can either step up to the plate and compete or go out of business. Their choice.

crowley, You are living (barely) proof that public education is failing. If all schools were private, they would have to be good & offer value for money to attract kids to their school. If not, or if the results suck, the parrents can take thier kids & their money elsewhere. Your first point is 100% wrong, & the status quo is why the trust fund families don’t have to compete. Keep the masses bogged down in a sh!tty system that sucks & they will never compete against the establishment types we have now.

What does this have to do with corporations? It’s the California state government that is dumbing people down.

I know Cali’s fun target, but as far as i can tell, over 90% of states have adopted these Core Standards.. California was a hold-out here. Texas hasn’t adopted it yet

Texas has been teaching algebra in th grade AT LEAST since 1964, when I took it. Don’t know how long before that. Now, every 8th grader takes pre algebra, the whiz kids and the kids parents are prepping for college take algebra in th grade, 9th grade, then on from there, with Calculus (an amazing waste, since no college will accept them as advanced placement students.) as seniors.

The more government interference at the state and federal level in education the less educated the children become. Remember, low information people vote Democrat.

1) Private education isn’t just for rich people, moron. Lots of middle class and even working class children attend private schools; my three kids did.
2) A competitive entrance exam for entrance to better public schools would never work, it would be buried in an avalanche of racial, gender and ethnic discrimination suits.

I expect the exclusion of algebra in California schools will do wonders for the country losing it’s technological edge to the Chinese.
But then the Commiecrats like their voters stupid.

The variation in performance within private schools and public schools, as intact sets, make comparisons between the 2 categories fairly meaningless. Its simply not the case that every public school is shit, and always bested by any given private school. Nor are availability of vouchers and proximity to the best private schools uniform either.
I don’t understand California at all though
EDIT: Ok read a little of the article.. So, California is just falling in line with other states now, that already don’t require Algebra of 8th graders? What states are those?

Math just gets in the way of liberal indoctrination classes, something had to give so the liberal agenda could go “forward”…Perhaps next will be classes on how to get free shit, how to use your EBT card at a casino, How to set up a pay pal account at E-bay to use your EBT card, Joint rolling 101, How to snitch on your conservative parents and neighbors, Bus passes and you, How not to pay your taxes, How to operate your Obama phone, you know important stuff like that. With a drop out rate of 50 percent in some schools, they are just making it easier to push the morons to the next grade so California can claim it’s education system is working.

The exclusion of Algebra is just so that they won’t understand negative numbers, and not be freaked out by the state financial situation.
As far as education goes, I’m sure these “schools” are mostly located in California:

Do you remember , he went on , writing in your diary , ” Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two equal four ? ”
———–
How many fingers am I holding up , Winston ?
“Four ”
And if the party says that its not four but five — then how many ?
“Four ”
The word ended in a gasp of pain . ………………
…………………
……………………..
‘ You are a slow learner , Winston said O’Brien gently .
” How can I help it ?, he blubbered .” How can I help seeing what is in front of my eyes ? Two and Two are Four ”
” Sometimes , Winston , they are Five , sometimes they are three . Sometimes they are all of them at once . You must try harder , its not easy to become sane .”

Way back in the early 70′s, in California, there was a policy instituted regarding math classes. I don’t know if it was some kind of local experiment, or statewide, or how long it lasted.
Anyway, in my Junior High School, everyone was given a math test. If you scored high enough on it, you weren’t required to take any math classes in High School. Well, I aced the test, and was informed that I was not required to take any math classes from that point on.
Now, if there had been an intelligent adult in my life somewhere, (parent, school counselor, etc.), they would have looked at my test scores and encouraged me to pursue math, since I was really good at it for my age. But nothing like that existed in my life, so, being a teenager, I took ZERO math classes in High School.
Later, in working towards my civil engineering degree, I regretted that decision.
