Chicago’s 2nd Congressional District. In 1993 Mel Reynolds replaced Gus Savage, a racist anti-Semite who tried to rape a Peace Corps volunteer during a congressional trip to Zaire and was accused of a drive-by shooting that injured Reynolds during the election campaign. Reynolds only lasted two years before statutory rape and child pornography charges forced him to resign… then he was convicted of a bunch of financial crimes while he was in prison. Now he’s back, hoping to regain his seat after Jesse Jackson, Jr., resigned because of his own financial crimes. Democracy in action, Chicago style.

It appears that a criminal record is a career enhancer in Chicago. The Second Congressional District of Illinois has a history of electing perjurers, racists, anti-semites, pedophiles, financial swindlers and the mentally ill. They just gave a 64% endorsement to Jesse Jackson, jr. an unstable man who spent the campaign hiding from the law.
Accordingly, I don’t doubt that a criminal sleazeball like Mel Reynolds will get the nod from the voters, if only to avoid the horror of a white man/woman winning the seat.
