Europe’s Light Bulb Gestapo wants you to rat out your neighbors

When light bulbs are outlawed, only outlaws will have light bulbs.

When light bulbs are outlawed, only outlaws will have light bulbs.

The global warming fanatics have won another round in the European Union. Consider this frightening story from the Telegraph UK:

From September 1, it will be illegal to import conventional pearl or frosted bulbs of any shape or wattage. Traditional incandescent bulbs of 100 watts will also be banned under European law aimed at reducing energy bills and carbon dioxide emissions.

They will be replaced by energy saving lights, which usually use flourescent tubes, but it is thought some consumers will still prefer their ‘traditional’ bulbs, particularly for reading lamps.

There is evidence of people hoarding the old fashioned bulbs around Europe and enforcement agencies are ready to crack down on unscrupulous businessmen who continue to import the “illegal bulbs” from factories in China.

The story gets worse. Much worse. Great Britain will actually send out “trading standard officers” to make sure businesses aren’t selling any of the old-fashioned light bulbs people actually want. The public will also be encouraged to report anyone who has the temerity to sell illegal bulbs. Individuals who import the bulbs are subject to a £5,000 fine. And big companies can get nailed for even more.

This scares the hell out of Nigel Farrage, the leader of UKIP.

“Under this Government we begin to resemble East Germany in the 1980s where we snoop and report on local businesses,” he said. “No doubt the next move will be to snoop on your parents if they continue to use old fashioned light bulbs.”

We can foresee a future where small groups of people gather in dark living rooms around Great Britain and someone will say, “Let’s light one up.” But they’ll just be talking about illegal incandescent bulbs.

I’m sure that my science is probably faulty here, but don’t plants need CO2 to grow and produce oxygen? So, if the goal is to eliminate CO2 emitions, won’t the end result be less plantlife and less oxygen? Maybe someone can help me out here.

As Arkansans, we may have given the world Bill Clinton…BUT Bill never did to us what YOUR Obama is doing to us now. He may not have been able to keep his pants zipped but he tried to help the US.

When will government and the educators get the school kids involved to rat out their parents?

Oh yeah, I forgot. They’re already doing it.

I use fluorescents in several fixtures around the house. They are great in places where they are turned on for long periods. I’ve got them in some outdoor fixtures and they’re still good after two years of running several hours a night. In these instances, they are definitely a plus and cost less overall.

They suck in places where light is only needed for a few minutes here and there, like a stairway or a bathroom. The repetitive on-and-off kills them easily within a year. The cost of the bulb alone is more than the cost of electricity used by regular bulbs during the same period.

Like the article mentioned, I prefer regular bulbs for reading, but also needlework and knitting. I’ve been using fluors for at least 4 years now, so have become accustomed to the difference in light temperature for general room lighting. However I simply cannot tolerate them for eye intensive tasks. They have a weird sort of glare or something that I can’t quite put my finger on, but it becomes annoying after a short time.

I wonder if the light bulb police are going to nab people who use regular bulbs in their ovens and refrigerators? The fluors won’t fit in either, nor can they take the heat of an oven or the constant on-off of a fridge.

The California Coastal Commission already regulates the lightbubls people can use along the coast…and the state legislature tried (unsuccessfully for once) to pass a similar law in California…

I loved the writing of this story, especially the last paragraph:

“We can foresee a future where small groups of people gather in dark living rooms around Great Britain and someone will say, “Let’s light one up.” But they’ll just be talking about illegal incandescent bulbs.”

That cracked me up! =)
