Forbes: Republicans Raised Taxes And Redefined Wealth In America. A generation ago President George H.W. Bush was cajoled -by Democrats- into going back on his pledge of “no new taxes”. During the next Presidential election many of the same Democrats used that occasion to pulverize the man for having broken his promise. The GOP may have an elephant for their mascot, but they certainly do not have the memory of one.

We have lost the republic because we have lost the two party system. Let’s just get the tyranny started so we can we can overthrow these statists and restart the Tytler Cycle.

Well, we have been shafted by our representatives. Not that I expected anything else. There is very little moral fortitude in our representation – they mostly have no ethics and the backbones of slugs.

After 3 weeks in Germany, I can see more clearly what is happening here. Mind you – the socialism they have in Germany works well there, but it is because they have been BUILDING it for over 130 years. Even through their world wars, their times of desperate poverty and rebuilding, their social structure has been in place and has been building. The result is that a man like my Father-in-law, who would be in the top 5% in the US, is comfortable, but not rich over there.

For example – he owns an apartment building which is valued at over 2 million Euros. He can’t charge tenants any more than a set percentage of their income for rent. (I think it’s like 13%, but don’t quote me). The taxes he must pay on each apartment are a set percentage of THAT – like 70%, plus he must pay tax on the entire building, and of course, income tax on any profit. Worse: he must now upgrade the entire electrical system of the building by 2015 to bring it to the new code standards, and the government is not going to help him pay for that. (Over the years he has had to do the same with the plumbing, and windows. This is the second time for the electric overhaul.)

My husband and his sister have told his Dad to sell the building, since it’s more problem than it’s worth – but his dad owns the building outright, and will be taxed at over 50% when he sells. Of course – when he dies his estate will also be taxed at over 50%, including on the remaining 50%. So, his dad – who has worked hard his whole life to support and provide for his family, has a standard of living which is just slightly better than the tenants in his building.

The DIFFERENCE there is that they actually do get something for all of their taxes. No enough to make it worth all of that, but they do get smooth public services. And, the tenants in his building do have a good life-quality, even though they may be waitresses or shop-clerks. I have never seen the kind of abject poverty that we see in our cities in Germany. There are poor people for sure, but their “ghettoes” look like pretty much like every other middle-class neighborhood, except interestingly, there is less graffiti. My husband says that they don’t “sh*t where they live”.

Düsseldorf. My husband is from there, and all of his family live in the vicinity.

I flew into there a few times, but never got around. I must say though, the first time I visited Germany I looked at the faces and thought to myself….”Self”, (which is what I call myself when I talk to myself) I said “self, this looks like a country that could use a HEALTHY dose of Prozac in the water supply.”

Interesting. Very interesting. Goverment wants to make sure that since they are born with nothing they die with nothing and all of it IN THE END ends up with the government IN EXCHANGE for some modicum of security which ensures that no one truly gets profits from excessive or hard work. It would be better to not work hard and rely on the government and the taxes of those that cannot help themselves but work hard since it is in their nature. I find that interesting. Thanks for that exposition. The choices are clear go Galt or let things happen as they are and live upon the efforts of the few hoping they won’t go Galt or work hard like your Father in Law and just deal with the crazy and oppressive taxation. Because of course the public services may be streamlined and there are no real rich and no real poor, but that is because of people like your Father in Law who are good people that want to live the right way and do the right thing. If people like him (all of them) go Galt the country and every public service goes away and there will be extreme poverty as that country has already seen. The government exist due to the patriotism of people like your FIL, without people like him the govt will be done. It will be difficult to then exercise the folks left behind to become like your FIL because they are not used to that responsibility. It is crazy.

I’ve said this before. The insiders get together and decide who is going to be “re-elected” and who isn’t. While I still vote, I have the feeling I am wasting my time. I hate to say this, but if the Taliban flattened the District of Corruption, I wouldn’t shed a tear. But they aren’t dumb enough to harm their closest allies.
The corruption in that cesspool is mind boggling. But, the stupid voters asked for it, now they have it, and like I said, the voters no longer have a say.

I forgot to add that although the disapproval rate of congress is at about 90%, 94% of incumbents were re-elected, including that stellar citizen, Jesse “Jailbird” Jackson Jr. Probably the 6% that weren’t re-elected decided they they have embezzled enough money and are tired of the asskissing necessary in DC, so didnt run for re-election. Either that or the DC machine told them that they would see to it that they didn’t win.
