Guns, Mental Illness and Newtown. “People who are serious about preventing the next Newtown should embrace much greater funding for mental health, strong laws for civil commitment of the violently mentally ill—and stop kidding themselves that pretend gun-free zones will stop killers.” Maybe if the useless media limited the airtime devoted to these incidents, attention-seeking lunatics wouldn’t be so tempted to perpetrate them. But then, what would the mush-mouths talk about? Obama has created utopia, history is now over.

I predict that our government’s war against the second ammendment will work out just like its war on drugs, alcohol prohibition, war on poverty, (insert your favorite government failure here).

Only one amendment was ever repealed. Why was that and how many died before it was? Answer that, progressives.

What’s funny, is that is the last time the progressive movement did anything by the book in this country. They actually went through the amendment process.

I just now contacted Mr. Paul’s D.C. office, though very busy, the person answering the phone was polite, obviously harried, under-pressure to say the least, but I was able to get IHTM into the conversation 2 times, and it seems he took the i hate the media dot com down on paper, but his phones were busy, so i got to the point.
I told him someone here was apparently misrepresenting Ron Paul. He thanked me, told me he’d look into it, and I wished him a merry christmas, and he thanked me and said, and i quote, “You too.”

As far as the title of this thread goes, maybe we should address the 2nd point first.
Since we obviously have someone here with a mental illness (jcrowley), we should focus on the problem we deal with daily.
Look at it from this perspective. Lanza lived in his mother’s windowless basement, and spent most of his time on the computer. Should we have the authorities check out jcrowley before he “goes postal” and kills the kids at his local daycare?

First step: Ex-military (with cleared psych testing), National Guard person, ex-cops or current cops out of duty, and/or someone that has gun experience that knows how to use it and has used it in battle or in battle formats IN and AROUND schools. Allocate what public schools already get to security.
Second step: Consider CERTAIN key members of the administration and/or front office to have psych evaluations, gun training and gun owning (concealed) as a second wave of protection for the school not just from outside forces but also inside forces.
Third step: Increase or include if not already a safety drill program for all students in addition to fire drills and also create if not already a secure entry and exit ways programs.
Once you do all of that for all public schools and incentivate private schools and semi-private schools to do the same or better, then we can start talking about revisiting or refining the gun control laws that are NOW on the books without adding to them and increasing awareness of mental health issues.
Those who are raising even tiny red flags from age 1 to age 24 should be monitored. Then talk about those who are adults and out of their parents home or not having parents pay their way through college and how adults who have mental issues and raise flags should be monitored and helped. I am all for helpign those that have mental issues, but we need to bring security in first.

Whatever… I have no such qualms nor negative view on that. You have no problems with ex-cops being said and that can also in your mind be considered negative. To me it doesn’t, if it does for others that is their problem not mine. Overall I feel that ex and former means the same thing and they shouldn’t have to carry any negative anything if it is attached to a service position like that.

You are willful in your desire to misunderstand OR to speak something that was not there nor intended. It is a very unnecessary statement any thinking person knows what I am talking about and most people here know ME enough to know that is not what I was talking about. If you look at the pictures of all people that do this, they all have this same look on their faces as Jim Norton stated last night and he was right. It had nothing to do with pre-birth looks your statement is hideous and in all reality stupid and insulting. Just like the one above about the military.

he sorta resembles a acquaintence of mine from 22-23 years ago back up north.. something in the longish face, spread-out eyes. He was kinda a weird riot, funny around us, but awkward. He was on lithium when i left for AZ and I heard stories about some schizo, bent-reality episodes later on. His sister was full on mentally disabled. His parents stuck together but were completely overwhelmed and pretty bitter

I’m lucky to be alive. Many times over.
My religious friends look at how “lucky” I am and say that God must have had a plan for me. If that’s true, I believe it must have something to do with the joy I see in kid’s eyes when I take them for a ride on a rocking unicorn. Especially if I picked them up out of a wheelchair to do it. Or watching a 90 something year old woman turn back into a kid when she rides. I’m one of the people that can honestly say, “I LOVE my job.”
Or maybe I’ve just been lucky. I don’t know.

I suspect the media gets the weirdest picture ever taken of these guys, specifically to make them seem like they were obviously nut cases. Unfortunantely, most serial killers and spree killers are relatively normal looking. THeir behaviour (poor social skills, “loner” tag, etc) are a little off center, but usually not to the extent that people think they are really dangerous. For instance, the shooter in Aurora Colorado was a bright, seemingly well adjusted guy. He signed up to persue a graduate degree, seemed to function in society fairly well, and if you look at “prior” pictures, was an average, attractive enough guy. But the picture we always see is the one right after he was arrested, with his hair dyed orange, and looking as though he is in shock or stoned or something. Monsters don’t always LOOK like monsters.

The mentality ill are left to their own issues until they are deemed a threat to others or themselves. By the time this happens, they are either dead, or have killed someone or harmed them greatly.
Dealing with someone who is mentality ill is not an easy thing to do. One minute they recognize you, the next you are some demon or that voice who they hear when they try to sleep. Having dealt with many, you never know what you are about to encounter and your 6th sense is in full gear.
I agree, it is time to provide these people with the necessary help that they need.

While I feel bad for the “mentally ill”, I can’t help but wonder how much of the problem is the “Don’t hesitate, medicate” mentality of the world today.
When you giver little Johnny Lithium and a “time out” instead of five across the backside I believe you are part of the problem.
NOT that some kids on meds DON”T need them, but how many that DON”T need meds ARE on them?
Sorry folks, and while i AM NOT ADVOCATING CHILD ABUSE, I am ADVOCATING CHILD DISCIPLINE over child medicatio0n just because it is easier than raising your kid.

In true, clasic mental illness (bi polar, schizophrenics, major depressives, etc) some medication is almost always required to even out chemical imbalances that affect behaviour. But they also nee therapy, they need structure, with clear parameters on behaviour, and predictable consequences if their behaviour strays beyond those parameters. Mentally challenges, TBI, tumors in the brain etc are a whole different story. Some modifications must be made for the individual and they don’t belong in a mental institution. When I last worked Psych, we had a kid transferred to us from a group home who was mentally retarded (yes, I did say that word!) nonverbal, and completely undiscilined in part because of his problems. I want to say he had some other sensory issues as well, but I can’t remember the details. At any rate, he was acting out, required a 1:1 staffing 24 hours a day, and was violent. We ALL at some time got hit, scratched, our boobs twisted, bruised and battered. He was there for some 2-3 weeks before someone snapped and did a complete physical. Turned out he was in pain from a severe ear infection, but had no way to tell us and the home looked at the behaviou and dumped him back at the Psych hospital without even looking to see if there was a physical reason for his change in behaviour.

So, he’s still unbalanced, but taking away the intense pain caused him to act out less. That’s a step in the right direction.
Ear infections cause a LOT of problems, especially if they’re not correctly diagnosed. I know personally of a number of kids that were considered rather slow, until their ear infections were diagnosed and treated. Suddenly, they’re not in pain, and they can hear. It changes them drastically.

Yeah, due to allergies, all 3 of mine had problems. Evryone got tubes at some point, and my sone actually got them twice! This young man was not, as far as I could tell. getting any kind of rehab or therapy to make him more functional. Just housed in the group home. I thnk they had some basics like a day care, coloring and such, and he really liked music, but I think they felt his level of retardation precluded any real learning.
