Congress prepares to Jerk everyone around

Congress prepares to Jerk everyone around

Remember Steve Martin’s movie The Jerk? Navin R. Johnson said all he needed was the ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair. And that’s all he needed.

Now the jerks in Congress say that in order to pay for health care, they need is a tax on the wealthy. And that’s all they need.

But don’t fear, the Democrats say. It’ll just be the rich people. That’s all they need.

Oh, and perhaps a tax on kinda rich people, depending on where you live.

“The bill is funded largely from a 5.4 percent tax on individuals making more than $500,000 a year and couples making more than $1 million, starting in 2011.”

So it’ll just be a tax on the wealthy. And the kinda wealthy. That’s all they need. Oh, and maybe small business owners.

“The tax would hit only 1.2 percent of taxpayers who claim business income on their returns, according to the estimates by the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation. But that percentage would grow as business owners’ nominal incomes rise with inflation.”

OK. So just the tax on the wealthy. And the kinda wealthy. And small business owners. That’s all they need. And…ummm… people who are trying to become wealthy and small businesses that want to become bigger.

“But unlike other income tax rates, the new tax would not be indexed for inflation. As incomes rise over time because of inflation, more families — and more small business owners — would be hit by the tax.”

But that’s it! Just the wealthy. And the kinda wealthy. And small business owners. And people who are trying to become wealthy and small business that want to become bigger. That’s all they need.

And, perhaps, those that won’t buy qualified (i.e., any insurance firm that’s bribed Congress) health insurance.

“The health care bill would impose new taxes on people who don’t buy qualified health insurance, including those making less than $250,000 a year.”

But, besides, the rich, the kinda rich, the small business owner, the people who want to be rich, the small business owners who want to be bigger, and the people who don’t buy qualified health insurance, no one else will be taxed.

Of course, that’s if Congress’s projections are on target. Otherwise they’ll tax everyone.

Besides the rich, the kinda rich, the small business owner, the people who want to be rich and the small business owners who want to be bigger, and the people who don’t buy qualified health insurance, and everyone else, no one else will be taxed.
