Only the poor go to war? Liberals just can’t make the argument that the rich don’t serve and also define the rich as family income over $75,000.
And don’t look now, Jesse, but John McCain’s son is in the military. So was Sarah Palin’s. Pat Tillman left the NFL, enlisted and got killed in Afghanistan. And they all qualify as rich by liberal standards.
Oh, wait. We don’t have a draft, do we? All those damn rich kids enlisted.

Maybe it IS time to reinstate the draft. Train ‘em to shoot, and give them a target. Enough of this “we can’t do that or the enemy will think bad of us” shit. That is why I was against the Iraq and Afghan “war”. I was 18 when they ended the draft, so I was fortunate enough to not go to that “war”. I saw that Vietnam was not a war to win, but a war to not lose. Kinda like a football team with a 5 point lead going into a prevent defense with 5 minutes on the clock. It never seems to end well. If you’re going to do it, go Braveheart on their asses. Make them think twice, if not more, about screwing with us again.

The volunteer army is probably THE best thing to happen for the poor that have any ambition. Who else will buy you an education for just a few years of work with no real qualifications to get in the door.
Even the enlisted guys get education, if only through distance ed. programs. I once knew an E-5 or E-6 that had 3 degrees and was persuing a PhD.

My husband & I volunteered and enlisted in the Navy. Most people who join, get a leg up on life, an education, as an earlier commenter put it, but also experience you can’t get elsewhere. My husband obtained a kick-ass job after leaving the military, because of his military experience. He still volunteers in the reserves, and I in the active Navy, but, according to liberals, we are supposedly rich.

Lotsa drama here. I don’t recall many people treating military badly when they came back — most people I know are buying them drinks, thanking them for their service to the point of being annoying.
I don’t doubt that you have nerve — it takes balls to go into combat with a camera as your primary weapon, but talking about pissing on the flag your friends are out there dying for isn’t a good way to make a first impression. Or a second one, for that matter.

I don’t think the flag is a bad thing. Much good has been done under that flag, all free people in the world have that flag to thank and the people who’ve died raising it.
The problem today is that our flag does not represent freedom anymore. We live in a fascist post-constitutional republic. I never joined the military because of that reason, although I’ve always wanted to. What we need to do is take that flag back and give it meaning again. Over the next couple decades (in my estimation) we need to do that with our votes and throw these corrupt politicians out of office and replace them with people who actually value the lives of our fellow citizens and freedom. If that doesn’t work or they become even more corrupt, the American citizen may need to organize and take our country back by force. That may be a radical statement, but it’s the truth. We can’t let freedom die under our watch, we just can’t. God forbid if that does happen, people like you and your army buddies will hopefully be on the side of freedom and the history that flag has stood for. I understand your frustration, but the problem is not that flag, it’s with the people in DC and the uninformed and greedy voter.
I don’t know what else to say. I’m not upset or angry with your opinion. Thank you for your service. That flag though represents the second greatest document ever written, save the Bible. That flag doesn’t represent the Constitution anymore, and I’m sorry it doesn’t. Us civilians have a duty to make that flag represent what it originally did. Everyone in the military or law enforcement have the same duty. All Americans have that duty, though some would rather take us towards tyranny.

Look at other people on earth besides the American people. What other system of governing on earth has been created that has brought such prosperity and such a high standard of living as the American system? My ancestors fled from central Europe in the early 1900′s to come here. My grandfather fought only a few short years later against tyranny in the very lands his parents came from. What would the world look like without America? If there was no America, and my ancestors had not the ability to flee their homeland to come here, what kind of life would I be living right now (assuming I was ever born of course)? Do we stand and fight or do we assimilate? Whose values do we turn to and accept? The Chinese? North Koreans? Russians? Arabs? Latin America? You talk about the people of earth, but a lot of people suck. We have something good here because we are united in our independence. Every other nation defines themselves based upon nationality, we define ourselves based upon individual rights.
Is our system broken and corrupted? No doubt. It’s in dire need of fixing. But there is nothing else out there to look for that could possibly be better than what our founders created for us. It’s not perfect, but it is the best system of government this world has ever seen. We’ve just lost our way a bit.
