Maldives cabinet holds meeting underwater to warn about climate change (P.S., please send money)

The president of the Maldives and his cabinet donned scuba gear and held an underwater meeting to highlight the threat the island nation faces because of dreaded global warming.

At the meeting, which took place 16 feet underwater, the Cabinet signed a declaration demanding global cuts in carbon emissions. Come December, they’ll jump aboard a carbon-spewing jet and deliver their demands to the U.N. Climate Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.

When asked what would happen if Copenhagen fails, President Mohamed Nasheed, a master of understatement, said, “We are all going to die.”

Unfortunately, the facts don’t back up Nasheed’s plaintive wailing. A recent study indicates that sea levels are actually falling in the Indian Ocean.

But it’s a lot easier to extort money from the United States if you can say, “We’re all going to die” than it is if you say “Hey, bigger beaches.”

What’s the point? The Maldives are underwater if some leaves the faucet running.
