According to OpenSecrets.org, Senator Barack Obama received $101,332 in political contributions from A.I.G. In fact, the two largest recipients of A.I.G. donations were Obama and Connecticut’s Democrat Senator Christopher Dodd. Oops. That seems to have slipped the President’s mind.
A.I.G.’s Financial Products affiliate doled out $136,928 during the 2008 cycle. That, of course, is the same division that bet trillions of dollars on credit-default swaps and “misjudged” the market.
The Washington Post reports a “mob effect” at A.I.G financial products division:
A tidal wave of public outrage over bonus payments swamped American International Group yesterday. Hired guards stood watch outside the suburban Connecticut offices of AIG Financial Products, the division whose exotic derivatives brought the insurance giant to the brink of collapse last year. Inside, death threats and angry letters flooded e-mail inboxes. Irate callers lit up the phone lines. Senior managers submitted their resignations. Some employees didn’t show up at all.
“I’m angry about these bonuses, too,” Obama insisted. But what he was probably muttering under his breath was, “Those guys got millions. How come I only got $101,332?”
At least the A.I.G. guys worked for their money.
