From The One to The None: Obama pissed when Russian officials refuse to shake his hand

July 14, 2009, 11:41 am · 37 comments

This is hilarious. Barack Obama enters a room with Russian President Medvedev. They’re greeted by a reception line of Russian officials who refuse to shake hands with Barack Obama. Why, it’s almost as if the Greatest President in History isn’t even the Greatest President in the Room.

And the best part is Obama’s reaction. The pissed off look on his face is priceless.

Uh, I’m a big fan, but I think you’re reaching way beyond reality on this one. It looks pretty clear here that he is not reaching out to shake hands with the people in question, but he is introducing Medvedev (I assume that’s who’s walking next to him) to each of the people in the line. You can see by the possitioning of his hand – when you’re gesturing towards someone, you’re hand will tend to be angled upwards, as the messiah’s is; when you are reaching out to shake hands, your hand tends to be tilted a little more towards the floor, as Medvedev’s is. As far as him looking pissed, that’s just the messiah’s normal dour expression, when he’s not posturing for the teleprompter.

Absolutely not. He ends up doing that after he realizes that no one wants to shake his hand. Smart move to make it look that way after a few handshake attempts. And you can also see the exasperation and the quick drop of the hand after the third attempt. That’s when he realized he had to try something else.

Sorry, but I think you’re seeing what you were “told” to see on the youtube page. If you look at the section in this fox story http://is.gd/1yRHn starting at about where there are 2:10 left, you’ll see a snippet from earlier in the line where, while you can’t see his hands, you can tell that Obama is shaking hands with people earlier in the line. Then, it skips to a point where Obama is introducing Medvedev to a man in uniform, who I blieve is chairman of the joint chiefs Michael Mullen, and continues down the line with introductions, as Medvedev shakes their hands. It’s pretty clear to me that at the start of the line are members of the Russian delegation, to whom Obama is introduced, followed by members of the American delegation, who Obama is introducing to Medvedev. If you need confirmation that the military gentleman being introduced to Medvedev is in fact American, check this cnn story which shows the him signing the agreements for the US delegation, at about :36 in. http://is.gd/1yRWG

I’m happy to see Obama shown for the fool he is, and there are plenty of legitimate instances to do that. But I don’t think this is one of those occasions. And I don’t want to see conservatives fall into the absurd liberal spin cycle that the Bush Derangement Syndrom sufferers subjected us to. It made them look like blithering idiots – I’d hope we’re better than that.

Stories from some of the injured Vets in U.S. Hospitals report that our Presidents handshake is like grabbing a “dead fish.” This “girlieman” gesture may be the reason why the “Russkies” are not interested in rubbing palms with the messiah!

Look at the caption to the right:

“US President Barack Obama (R) introduces Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (2nd R) to members of the US delegation prior to their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, on July 6, 2009. Obama faces a delicate balancing act on human rights as he visits Moscow in a bid to “reset” strained relations and win Russia’s support on a range of pressing security issues.”

Those are AMERICAN diplomats that he was “snubbed” by. Yeah. You have no basis of argument, you are just finding any excuse to insult the President.

No wonder you hate the media, even they have more than half a brain to figure out he was making an introduction over attempting to shake hands w/these 3 men.

If the “mainstream media” made this a story, as I’m sure you are decrying, they would get laughed at on a bigger scale than people who currently laugh at Fox News.

Scott k is delusional. Do you think for a minute that Ronald Reagan, Clinton, or Bush would have put up with this outrageous display of disrespect? They’d have been burning jet fuel in nothing flat. This is merely a small indicator of the contempt they have for B.O., and by extension, the idiots who elected him. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Vance, you obviously are stupid.

It’s proven those men aren’t Russian as this story here falsely claims. They are American. Why do they need to shake the hand of a man who they shook hands with earlier?

Berengier, you are obviously retarded. I am not stupid and I can prove it. I didn’t vote for the Messiah. The strange thing is, I’m having more and more difficulty everyday finding anyone who did. Strut and crow you stupid apologist rooster, you’re chickens are coming home to roost and they’ll be speaking Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian and Farsi when they get here. This is a false story, plain and simple. The President of Russia was the man in the red tie. Why is the President of Russia needing to shake the hands of his own Diplomats?

OH WAIT, THEY ARE AMERICAN DIPLOMATS.

So yes, you are retarded.

Do me a favor Berry, strip a lamp cord, touch the bare wires to your temples, and have one of your Kool-aid drinking buddies plug it in. The resulting electroshock therapy might just snap you out it. This will also approximate the kind of health care you can expect when you’re buddy B.O. gets finished raping the health care system along with everything else– including your bank account. When he said he was for change, he meant pocket change, because he isn’t going to stop until he holds every idiot like you upside down by the ankles and shakes every penny out of your pockets. You are not going to win in a war of words against me B. O.-boy because you are flat-out to ignorant. I will always be a half dozen keystrokes ahead of you. Hurry up and reply with more illiteracy so I can stick your butt in a blender again. This is fun! LMFAO!

Hey Vance,

Good job showing your intelligence again. I don’t agree with his health care plan.

You don’t have to drink the kool-aid in order to agree or disagree with someone. I don’t agree with every little thing he does.

I do however look at facts. Fact: Those were American Diplomats shaking the hands of the Russian President. I even posted a picture/profile of one of them to prove it.

Fact: You are stupid.

Berengier July 18, 2009, 11:46 pm at 11:46 pm

In fact I know you are stupid. Stupidity is definated as “lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; dull.”

You lack the quickness to understand that I have shown proof that those were American diplomats. Instead, you present a straw man (His health care plan) in order to change the subject because you realize you are losing.

Which is a fallacy. That would be like me saying “Hey, you need to stop drinking the Republican kool aid because under the Bush administration we gave up more rights than any other President ever!” Or that “Hey, looks who’s fault it was that 9/11 happened, despite the fact he was given proof that it was going to happen, and he was the one in charge when it happened!”

Face it, no matter what you say, I will simply tear it apart and show that you lack the intelligence to be able to understand anything.

BTW who is the next Republican who will be caught cheating?

Now we’re getting somewhere health-care-Bear-y. I noticed you posted twice without waiting for a rebuttal; getting under your skin, eh? Here’s a newsflash you knuckle-dragging moron. In high office, they have a little something called PROTOCOL. It doesn’t matter if you are the President of Russia, the U.S., or whatever, the same thing applies. Wars have been fought over misinterpeted body language and real or imagined slights. Diplomatic protocol covers the handshake quite well. When the hand is held in the VERTICAL POSITION at waist level WITH THE THUMB EXTENDED (see film clip) that is the signal in HIGH PROTOCOL for a handshake. It is a clear and unmistakable declaration of intent and you can darned well rest assured that American or Russian Diplomats of the caliber seen in the meet and greet line knew that. The gesture of INTRODUCTION in HIGH PROTOCOL is completely different. In the gesture of INTRODUCTION, the hand is held on the HORIZONTAL PLANE, above waist level with the thumb held tight to the hand. This is designed to send a clear signal that a handshake is not desired or expected. As far as who shakes hands with who you idiot; everyone shakes hands with everyone at a high, media-visible function. Yes, Obama-boy, even with their own diplomats. In the language of diplomacy, not to be confused with Ghetto-Speak, it is traditional that the visiting Dignitary shake hands first. This is considered good manners on the part of the host country and part of a proper welcome. Look at the film Kool-aid Berry, and then look in the mirror. You’re an idiot.

*yawn* I replied twice because I couldnt go back and add stuff to my previous one. The one where I said one is stupid to ignore facts. I never saw you post facts, you just said “According to protocol…” Show me this “Protocol.” I am not doubting you, but you should back it up. I backed up showing you proof that it was an American diplomat.

So you are saying that those were AMERICAN diplomats now? Because before you said they were RUSSIAN diplomats. Which one is it? They cant be both American AND Russian?

http://www.daylife.com/photo/0gUafti8QY3In

Read that caption to the right:

“US President Barack Obama (R) introduces Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (2nd R) to members of the US delegation prior to their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, on July 6, 2009. ”

From where I am standing, it looks like the VISITING dignitary is shaking hands first. Again. VISITING got the first hand shake. Since those Diplomats are AMERICAN.

If anyone is drinking kool aid, it’s you. If this were a real story, Fox News would have been ALL OVER this. ALL over it. Completely over it. You know it. But it wasn’t even questioned on the news (See Fox News clip).

Nice try Berry. Three points in fact.
#1 Look back over our posts; I had no opinion concerning the nationality of the Diplomats, only you did. In fact you propped up your entire lame arguement on thet point. In the world of diplomatic Protocol, it doesn’t matter, everyone shakes hand with everyone. Is it starting to soak in yet?
#2 The last time I checked, the Kremlin was located in Russia. Does this mean the Russian president is “visiting” his own country? You’re slipping here Berry, keep your eye on the ball.
#3 You state in your last post; “Visiting got the first hand shake.” Wrong again. “visiting,” as you call him, got the only handshakes.
You know Berry, I wish you were right. I do not enjoy watching this kind of disrespect being showed to my country or the office of the President of the United States, regardless of who sits in the chair. It gives me no pleasure. I was embarsassed for the man.

Sorry to post out of turn Berry, but I neglected to address one of your points. If you will Google “Diplomatic handshake protocols” you will find a wealth of information. Included below is a small copy and paste to whet your appetite. FOX news often gets carried away just like the other networks do. But one thing they do not do is promote the disgrace of America for the sake of ratings.

The Diplomatic Handshake
One recent phenomenon is the increasing importance of handshakes as part of diplomatic practice. The proffered hand is now taken as an signal of good faith and willingness to cooperate, the refusal to do so is seen as the opposite, and ignoring a proffered hand a significant diplomatic insult and a clear signal of disapproval. Prince Charles pointedly ignored Idi Amin’s proffered hand at Jomo Kenyatta’s funeral (1978). The question of whether or not Yitzak Rabin would shake Yasser Arafat’s hand was focused on to such an extent that President Clinton virtually threw the two together on the lawn of the White House. Symbolic as this was seen at the time, this tepid handshake was a far cry from Begin and Sadat’s embrace when Sadat visited Jerusalem. Perhaps embraces will be the next development. British Prime Minister Tony Blair in meeting Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams temporized, shaking hands with him, but out of public sight. There is, of course, the issue of paranoia amongst leaders. Nicolae Ceacescu feared assassination from poison made to be absorbed through the palm and so kept his hand to himself.(9) President de Gaulle was a master at ignoring proffered hands.

Not my place to research your claims.

And who is this Berry person?

And you keep making assumptions left and right. First you thought they were Russian (Hence why you are here not defending the original post). If you dislike the guy, fine. But you once didn’t refute that they weren’t Russian. Not once. The topic on this page says “…Russian officials refuse to shake his hand.”

Instead of saying “Oh those aren’t Russian officials” you jump into this huge “Blah blah blah, I hate Obama” thing. Fine, you hate Obama. Who cares? So do a lot of other people.

But when you get on here and insult the man, you look as if you are agreeing with the post. And you made assumptions that I support the man in every single thing he does. I don’t.

What a bunch of propoganda crap!

Obama is making hand gestures as he introduces Russian President to American Officials. The last one in video is Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. The truth is out there, you just have to look for it.

President Obama is left handed and it would make sense that he would extend his right hand to shake hands and not to gesture. One tends to gesture with their dominant hand, unless they are ambidextrous. For example, President Obama is left handed but returns the salute of service members with his right hand, just as one does when they are shaking hands. Customs and courtesies dictate that the visiting official is introduced by the host country and not the other way around. To the credit of the President when he realized that his extended hand was being left out there he turned it to a hand gesture. If you look at his facial expression right before he decided to start gesturing you will see that this was not the President introducing the Prime Minister but the President playing off the discourteous action of those Russian officials. It was by chance that when President Obama got to the Commerce Secretary he started to re-enforce his gesture motion to make it appear that he was gesturing the whole time. Think about it. Does the President of the United States need to give his own Commerce Secretary a firm handshake? The President was there to build a relationship with Russian official, an extension of his hand to give a hand shake would be appropriate and that is what he intended each time he stuck his hand out there just for it to be left to dangle. This was such a small thing to this giant, President Obama was bigger than that and did not let that disrespectful display set the tone and distract him from the purpose and reason he was there!

“Customs and courtesies dictate that the visiting official is introduced by the host country and not the other way around.”

EXACTLY. The host country is the United States. President Obama is introducing The Russian President to Secretary of Commerce – hence the hand gesture.

Fox and family only see what they want to see. The truth does not matter.

Love you all

The displayed Video Footage taken from Barack Obama’s July 2009 trip to Russia has been circulated in an edited, out of context version accompanied by the claim that it shows the U.S. President being “snubbed” as he attempts to shake hands with ” Russian officials.” Actually, the video shows no such incident.

Prior to the meeting of the two sides glimpsed at the very end of a clip, President Obama and Russian President Obama met and shook hands with the Russian delegation – but only a brief portion of the latter is included in the Clip displayed above, a portion in which President Obama is shown making directional hand gestures as he introduces President Medvedev to American Officials (the last of whom appears to be Commerce Secretary Gary Locke). President Obama is neither offering to shake hands nor being rebuffed in the attempt.

A non-edited video of the event clearly shows President Obama shaking hands with all the members of the Russian delegation:

Administrator..everyone else..even IF Obama was being snubbed, which is clearly..CLEARLY..not the case..you should be outraged by a member of the Russian government (even though clearly its a US delegation) snubbing the US President, regardless of who it is.
