There’s a little-known Presidential prerogative that allows the Commander In Chief to add “signing statements” to bills as he signs them into law. The purpose is make technical corrections in legislation or to guide officials in enforcing laws.
“President Obama promised yesterday,” a slanted Washington Post’s article said, “that he would rarely impose his own interpretation of legislation by attaching statements when he signs bills, pulling back significantly from the controversial use of the tactic by his predecessor, George W. Bush.”
“In a memorandum,” the story continued, “Obama also ordered executive branch officials to consult with the attorney general before assuming that hundreds of Bush’s past official statements on legislation remain in force.” Huh?
So nothing Bush signed into law can be assumed lawful unless first vetted by Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder? You know, the guy who vetted felonious fugitive financier Marc Rich for a Clinton pardon. The guy who thinks we’re all cowards who don’t talk enough about race.
Obama took another thinly-veiled swipe at Bush while basically continuing Bush’s practice. “There is no doubt that the practice of issuing such statements can be abused. I will issue signing statements to address constitutional concerns only when it is appropriate to do…”
Can we get a specific out of this man for once? At what point does this practice become abusive? What constitutional concerns? When is it appropriate?
Memo to Obama’s speechwriter from our high school English teacher: Please provide examples to substantiate all generalizations.
