Remember that scene at the end of The Graduate where Dustin Hoffman breaks up Katherine Ross’ wedding and the two of them are sitting in the back of the bus? Instead of looking joyful because he got the girl, a slight look of terror creeps across his face as he realizes he doesn’t really know her.
We picture that same look creeping across reporters’ faces at the White House on Monday after one of them asked Press Secretary Robert Gibbs if President Obama will stand by his campaign pledge to not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.
Gibbs hemmed and hawed, stuttered and stammered and finally said, “the question is hypothetical.” When that didn’t placate the reporter, he went with “we are going to let the process work it’s way through.”
Reporters actually laughed at him. Not with him, mind you, but at him.
“Oh, crap,” the press corps thought as that Dustin Hoffman look crept across their collective faces, “Maybe we shouldn’t have eloped with this Obama guy.”

The White House Press Corps is finally growing a backbone. Chip Reed, CBS, Helen Thomas, the reporter from OZ, and some of the other “journalists!%&#?” are discovering the left wing “spin” and challenging Obama’s credentials and campaign promises.

Gibbs is the nerdy guy who hangs out with the cool guys (cool guy being Barry, Joe, and Axelrod) to get some respect even though all the cool guys treat him like poop.
