Robert Gibbs knows government healthcare works in other countries. Just don’t ask him which ones.

"Hush now. Let's not have any of those difficult questions."

When President Obama spoke to the American Medical Association earlier this week, he said a single-payer health care system “works pretty well” in some countries.

That prompted a reporter to ask White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs to which countries the president was referring.

“I don’t know exactly the countries. I think if you talk to the people in the countries that have that system, they think their health care is pretty good,” Gibbs said.

The persistent reporter asked again if he knew specifically which countries.

“I assume Canada, Britain, maybe France,” Gibbs said evasively. “I don’t know the exact countries, but again, I don’t think the president is going way out on a limb that some people in other countries have a health care system that they like. Just as some Americans like the health care system that they have.”

Please allow us to translate what Gibbs was trying to say:

“Yes, some unspecified idiots in the United States think we have the world’s best healthcare system, but some other unspecificed geniuses in some other unspecific countries think their socialized medical systems are better. So it looks like the research speaks for itself and we’d need spend a few more trillion dollars on ObamaCare. Now let’s move on to Helen Thomas for a friendlier question.”

There is one difference that Mr Gibbs should know, in the European states and e.g. Australia, private medical insurance is allowed but, as is so evident with Britain’s National Health Service, the public care sucks. In Canada you’re not allowed private insurance for anything covered in the government programme. The only other places in the world with the same government-only coverage are Cuba and North Korea.
