Carl Levin the Senate Armed Services Commission Chairman has started “calling for faster training of Afghan security forces instead of sending more U.S. troops into combat.”

“Our support of this surge of the Afghan security forces will show our commitment to the success of a mission that is clearly in our national interests,” Levin said at a Capitol Hill news conference.” Senator Levin should probably be reminded that the surge in Iraq was conducted by US Forces. History has shown us that turning the battle over to the allies to early in the game does not typically work out well, kind of like what happened in Vietnam.

“I don’t think there’s a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan in the country or in the Congress,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who when last we checked had an approval level of 19% and seemed to care little about the support by the country.

Democratic Rep. John P. Murtha, chair of the powerful House Appropriations panel that oversees military spending, described himself as “very nervous” about sending more troops to Afghanistan and cited limited funds to do so.” We checked to see when the last time a Democrat was nervous about sending troops anywhere and found that it happens every few seconds somewhere in America.

“Let’s just take it easy,” Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters. reminding everyone of how Democrats normally approach war.

Murtha prefers the strategy of “quit, declare victory, go home.”
