Raymond Luc Levasseur, bomber, bank robber and symbol of academic freedom

The on-again off-again appearance of a convicted terrorist bomber is back on again at the University of Massachusetts.

UMass had decided that Raymond Luc Levasseur, one-time leader of the revolutionary United Freedom Front, will be allowed to speak on campus. Despite protests, the university says the bomber and bank robber speech reinforces its commitment to “academic freedom.”

Levasseur was sprung from the pen in 2004 after serving 18 years for plotting a series of bombings and bank robberies up and down the East Coast between 1976 and 1984. The UFF also killed a New Jersey state trooper and attempted to kill two others in Massachusetts.

“He shouldn’t be allowed to talk to any students,” said Rick Brown, president of the State Police Association. “Why give this man any credibility to speak in an academic environment? He has no remorse and who knows if he’s out to recruit. UMass should be ashamed of themselves for even inviting this man on campus.”

Please, Mr. Brown, don’t be so strident. Where will the next generation of terrorists come from if the elders are not allowed to pass their knowledge down to the children?

If this creep were a conservative you can bet UMass wouldn’t give him the time of day. So much for “Academic freedom”.
