The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

KQ is a theologian.. When I looked up the “G-d” practice months ago, i found–at first–deep and numerous references to Rabbinical traditions.. She could make a good study and living out this, and I mean that entirely with all due respect

uhm… not sure what you mean? I just think it is responsible for Christians to study as much as they can, the religion and practices that Jesus Himself studied (and practiced) when He was on Earth. Christians are too removed (in my opinion) from Judaism. Christianity if anything is a denomination or a sect OF Judaism. The first (and the last according to Revelation) major and important missionaries of Messiah were (and will be) Jews.

Jesus Christ, didn’t study Christianity, He studied (and practiced) Judaism (obviously). In fact, His teachings were so complex, that He was called a Rabbi. He was a Jew, plain and simple and it is to our lost (Christians I mean), if we do not take advantage of what Judaism has to teach us about Himself first and ourselves second.

Overall, I don’t practice Fundamental Judaism, but it is important to study it (in my humble opinion) as much as possible and there are many practices that I believe are more than appropriate to emulate/practice at this point in time. I think that if anything, Christians would benefit from celebrating many of the feasts and times of rest, the Passover celebration is awesome and when studied within the context of Christ, it is impressive.

Because many Christians do not study the Bible as much as they should, or they do not understand the origins of their Faith, or they believe that Christianity is a completely different religion and completely disregard its Jewish roots. Something the Apostle Paul warned against. These are not sins or bad behavior per se, just stating that it behooves Christians to be more aware of our roots. We run the risk of drifting and for lies to seep with the truth and causing issues.

I can say the same for Americans. No offense to any born American, but I know more about this country and its roots than the average born American person (of any age, perhaps, not more than those over the age of 60). All immigrants should of course know about the country they are immigrating to, however it is shameful for born Americans to be so lax in their knowledge of their country’s birth. That, among other things, (IMHO) is a major reason for this country being in the state that it is right now. Let’s not forget what’s-her-name stating that once her husband becomes President (at the time of his campaign), they were going to have to change our history. Progressives/Liberals have been doing that for decades to great success. People in this country (as a whole), in the 18th and 19th centuries, were the most educated and capable people in the world. The 20th century bore the fruits of this, which is why a lot of tech advantages have been seen in that time, however can we really say that we (Americans) are amongst the most educated and capable people in the world right now (as a whole)?

Anyway sorry for the long post. I just feel strongly about education, wisdom and knowledge.

Obviously my G-d comes first, but this country means a lot to me. When this country goes away we have nowhere else to go. So that is why I fight to maintain the standards this country has created for its citizenry.

You fought to be here. Your struggle to live in a better place was rewarded by a deeper understanding of the travails so many people suffer. Yet, we have a hundred million or more that were born here that take the whole thing for granted and a world full of hateful, envious and lazy dickwads that want to end the freedom that we have enjoyed and really wish everybody could! Your respect for this nation and its ideals was was never in question. I just wanted to make the point about the difference between a date versus the name of the holiday.

Yes you are right. It is important to underscore the INDEPENDENCE part of the day. A lot of people do not know what that is, nor have truly experienced it, even many who live here, they have no idea what is to be free. Indepedence and freedom also comes with a high price that only a few are willing to pay. It is an important day to celebrate, but also remember those who truly sacrificed their lives for this country to have an opportunity to exist and for us to benefit from.

You know, alien, I cannot see common cause with her. It isn’t for lack of trying.

She has a right to say whatever the hell it is that she’s saying — but she isn’t communicating, doesn’t appear to care, and is happy to pass the blame for her many communication failures upon the unfortunate recipients of her words.

Would a person truly interested in dialog do that? Would a person that wanted to win people over to their perspective think that having people on the blog develop a sport of hiding *all* her posts *without* reading them is an effective form of communication?

Would a reasonable person be concerned that her message simply isn’t getting through and try to change their method to suit the medium? Well, I’m guessing that about 5% of your posts get hidden — but I’m more than willing to bet that the percentage of your posts that gets read is close to 100%, even including the people that strongly disagree with you and including the posts that were hidden. You are communicating, and I know that you have changed your tactics to do that. Not everyone likes what you say, but you are communicating nonetheless.

Olivia isn’t communicating. She’d probably* like to co-opt this list, so that she could make us read what she believes to be the gospel truth, but it isn’t her forum, so she can’t — barring a governmental infringement of our rights to free speech. What she is doing is pissing in the wind. If anything, she is polarizing people and galvanizing opposition to her ideas. Achieving the exact opposite of your intentions is hardly an effective method of getting your perspective across. I’d like to use her posts to recruit for the RNC, she’s that good at it.

As a tool of creating more and more extreme conservatism in a reaction to her diatribes, she works well. Having what amounts to a tin ear, and an outsized ego, she will continue to wreck the political goals of her party via this blog — which is why, every now and then, I like to goad her just a little bit. With a certain degree of pleasure.

But a common cause? She’d have to have a cause — what she has is a knee-jerk, unthought-out reaction to conservatism, and a stubborn resistance to outside thought that means that she *never* will be able to coexist on this blog, nor even with people that foolishly profess conservatism in her presence. That is a form of intolerance that I find ugly and reprehensible. I also find it all too common amongst other liberals.

The person that has to change is Olivia. She wouldn’t have to sell out her beliefs, but she’d have to find some way of communicating, and blaming the people that she’s not communicating with isn’t doing the job**.I’m not here to do her thinking for her — that’s a problem she has to solve for herself — and she may not even see it as a problem! In the meantime, I enjoy the equilibrium we’ve reached, where she is useful to conservatives on this list.

The more she cuts, pastes, and types (and the less she thinks), the more people she repels. Life is good.

*yeah, I know, she’ll have a field day with that word. So sue me.

We are all creatures of Western Civ here.. Yes, Jameela, you are out. Otherwise, we enjoy a very core and significant set of common values. Can we seriously not name one among them? In addition, she is a fellow American, and I’m disappointed that her warm sentiment on Independence Day simply met with a swarm of blind down-voting. If I were to go mad hyperbolic, I’d suspect someone here might kick her to the enemy in a firefight. But I didn’t..

Yes she’s combatative. She has improved the game here, IMHO. Some IHTM’ers have had to very carefully lay out their cases and I find that extremely valuable. Perhaps that’s selfish of me 🙂 (and I admit maybe i’m missing the point of the website). For name-calling I can get better stuff in YouTube comments (oh and the racism is stewed to perfection on youtube, as Chapelle might say..so the recent infestors here might move on). I also have seen the sport of hiding her comments evolve as you have (whack-a-troll), but at the same time, I know a significant number of people are reading her posts, and are engaging her in actual debate, and as antagonistic as those threads get, you can see little bits of consensus precipitate out.

Of course, you’ve also explained to someone (Robert methinks) that this is a right wing humor site.. I remind myself of this quite often, and I doubt Olivia has taken that to heart. Much of what sounds like rage and histrionics is actually meant to amuse. This has helped me evolve my own communication, as you observed

I am always reminded of that ancient parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant. It does not require that any among them be idiots, but it does recognize we are all blind. Alien, I don’t hate Olivia, I pity her. Her heart and her brain are hardened to stone, impermeable stone. There is no common cause between her and I and very likely never will be, mostly on moral and ethical grounds. She may be a very nice person, but I could never come to any agreement with her concerning say, abortion, euthanasia, fetal stem-cell research, gay marriage, cloning, the role of the military, the role of the central (federal) government, education, etc., simply because she is so hyper partisan and so supportive of socialism and this Traitor-In-Chief, Barak Hussein Obama. These are areas in which I cannot budge a hair’s width in her direction.

I will not compromise my responsibility to God for a moment’s accord with Olivia, or her ilk. She is the enemy and deserves neither special favor nor extra privilege. I do not make concessions with the daughter of SATAN and so long as she holds her impiety, socialism, treason, sedition as a badge of honor she remains a princess in his court! I’ve reached as far as I dare to reach into her pigsty of a mind, in order to draw her out into the light of sanity, for fear of being sucked into her delusions should I reach farther. We’ll have common ground, she and I, when she makes the move in my direction, I’ve drawn my line in the sand. Alien, I know full well where she’s coming from…I’ve been there!

True. I find that the signal:noise ratio in her posts are just not worth my time, but I’d never go so far as to say she is badlife. However, she has alienated so many people that she had best be glad that I don’t moderate the group, or there would be a special regex in her future. (I’d name it instant_3_thumbs_down)

I have seen where the conversations have improved from the conservative side, but I can’t see where we are going to reach any form of consensus — instead, her opponents have had their opposition hardened to her position, and I just can’t see the logic on her side of that conversation for doing that. To me, a consensus means that we can reach a mutually beneficial understanding. Not happening here.

If she ever changes her tack, I’d welcome the dialog. Just not sure how she can go about doing that — things are that bad between the rest of the group and her. I cannot say that that level of animosity is good for anyone, and given that she owns that animosity through her own actions (something she’s vehemently denied before, so I fully expect another denial in 3..2..1…) I put the responsibility for finding a solution on her.

The reason behind why I have such a difficult time finding common cause with her is that what she refers to as vigorous debate appears to be a pissing match of epic proportions. While the people she has argued with have benefited in terms of thinking out their positions, pissing matches are never all that fun to watch, generally making me wish that she’d stfu already.

At work, if a person made this much trouble, their boss would find a way to get rid of them. I’m no different in that regard — looking at it from the larger perspective, I’d say that the aggravation isn’t worth it, fire everyone involved, and move on. I’ve never had to get that far at work before — usually, when people realize how serious I am, they find new ways to get along and get their work done. That’s all I really want anyway.

Olivia and I do not share a common cause. I want an America where the government plunders less, conscripts my labor less, wields less power over the use of my property. I want an America where there is a free market. Where small business is legislated into extinction with regulation and “tax hikes for the wealthiest Americans” while the corporations (like GE) are doing just fine because they have the lobbyists and lawyers to find the loopholes in the system . . . and because they are passing their so called tax increases onto the consumers . . . and because they’ve a free reign after the government killed off their upstart competition. My cause is the America our founders intended.

Olivia’s cause is a country that can grant rights . . . instead of one that must respect them. A place where I can be forced to insure my body as if it is their property. A place where I can be expected to take on two jobs to buy the health insurance for those that couldn’t be bothered to take on the first job to pay for their own. A place where my cost of living can shoot up ten percent in one year because fiat currency needed to finance all the vote buying schemes, crony kickbacks and “hopey changey” payoffs gutted the value of my dollar.

Respectfully, these are not the same causes. Nor can they both succeed in the same place at the same time.

I hope you will forgive the snark -I have tried to resist but alas I am not a big enough person to do so- but the way I see it the founders had not found fit to use July 4th as a perfectly fine day to enumerate our differences with the authoritarians and proclaim our grievances against the tyrants then the 2nd Continental Congress would have taken the day off.

Although I am willing to compromise on this point and offer up another day in which we can set aside our differences with those that seek to control our lives and establish the almighty state and reflect upon the fact that we are all happy citoyens bound together by that ever expanding power. I think I will pencil in the 14th of this month for just such an occasion.

My targets don’t shift. My targets are life, liberty and property. And I do not feel that holiday’s meant to remember these as the foundation of our happy republic need to inspire my solidarity to those who do not hold with these beliefs.

I respect that you do not find Olivia to be an authoritarian or tyrannical. However she professes support for systems that seek to control my body through health care, to control what products I buy and how I use the items I own through environmental regulation, that sees more profit from my labor than I do. I trust that you will at least be able to empathize with the view that powers having the authority to control your lifestyle, labor and body are authoritarian.

Thank you for posting this . For most it will be the first time to actually see it. I’m sadden by those that wish to destroy it and its meaning , but that’s what they do best . I’m very glad that I live in a country where this is the most important document. With this , stands most of our freedoms .

Train your children / grand children well. In a generation or two , this may not be here , if we don’t.
