Why did that awful Nazi Scott Walker lay off Wisconsin’s Outstanding First Year Teacher?

by editor on March 14, 2011

It’s outrageous. It’s unacceptable. It’s just plain crazy. It’s … what’s that? It’s the union’s fault. Never mind.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker explains what happened in the Wall Street Journal:

megan-sampson

Megan Sampson, Wisconsin's unemployed Outstanding First Year Teacher

In 2010, Megan Sampson was named an Outstanding First Year Teacher in Wisconsin. A week later, she got a layoff notice from the Milwaukee Public Schools. Why would one of the best new teachers in the state be one of the first let go? Because her collective-bargaining contract requires staffing decisions to be made based on seniority.

Ms. Sampson got a layoff notice because the union leadership would not accept reasonable changes to their contract. Instead, they hid behind a collective-bargaining agreement that costs the taxpayers $101,091 per year for each teacher, protects a 0% contribution for health-insurance premiums, and forces schools to hire and fire based on seniority and union rules.

My state’s budget-repair bill, which passed the Assembly on Feb. 25 and awaits a vote in the Senate, reforms this union-controlled hiring and firing process by allowing school districts to assign staff based on merit and performance. That keeps great teachers like Ms. Sampson in the classroom.

… As I noted on Twitter the other day, it’s easy to oppose merit pay when enough of the people you represent have no merit.

How do you really feel, Governor Walker? Don’t hide it. Try to let it out.

All I can say is this.. I’ve been in education for almost 20 years. I went to college for 7 (masters degree +) years. I’d qualify for free and reduced lunches for my family of 5 if I could be sole bread winner. I’m taking a 10% pay cut this year and a 20% pay cut in 2013. I thought a college education was supposed to help me. I would have been better off buying a house right after high school (when they were cheap) and working any job since. I’ve never been able to get ahead and am going backward.. Drive a ’93. Haven’t taken a vacation in 3 years. I don’t feel like a professional at all – just an idiot for thinking I could make a living helping others! Thanks Wisconsin!

kara: “Thanks Wisconsin!”

It isn’t WI that has caused this problem kara, it is your own union representation and hiarchy in the government sector. Take a look at how much the Department of Education costs the taxpayer each year. Take a hard look at what your superintendent is making. His assistant, their secretary, your principle, vice principle. Take a good look at how much money is spent before we’ve even reached your level. Now look at how many of our public sector pension plans and healthcare are set up- zero cost to the you, fully paid, fully funded by the taxpayer. I’ve looked at some school districts where a retiring teacher “declares” their status 3 years beforehand, and their pay is bumped to significantly add to their retirement benefits. People are living much longer lives and a 20 to 30 year retirement is not unheard of these days. All paid, no questions asked.

I have no pension from my employer, I pay into my own 401k and make my own dribbling little investments when and where I can. I pay a portion of my annual healthcare bill at about 33% and when I retire, I’m on my own for healthcare. I’ll have my 401k and social security to live on for the rest of my days and that’s no big deal, I knew that going in and planned ahead as best as could be expected.

I’m also the guy who pays your salary and benefits, though I have no children. Not a problem, it’s part of my share as a citizen of this country.

Here’s the bomb, and please don’t take this the wrong way, as I would really like your honest opinion. We, the taxpayer, are paying more per student per year for our education system than only a handful of countries around the world. As the number one economy on this earth, we are ranked somewhere in the high twenties to low thirties in the education of our youth. Can you, your superiors and your union tell us honestly that we are getting good value for the money we’re all spending? It’s easy to say “hey, I did my job well” but if the company goes bankrupt your solo efforts hardly matter. Can you honestly say that you, our educators, as a company or a corporation are putting out a product worth buying?

Having an entire family of teachers in my background, I can bet they are just pissing in their pants/panties right about now! If this thing Govenmor Walker is trying to do in Wisconsin works it’s going to go viral and just to make sure, I’m gonna be there with the gasoline and the matches!

I so despise the teachers’ unions!

i have teachers as inlaws and wife. They always complain how there are some people they work with that are flat-out incompetent or crazy. I point out they are still there because the union prevents them from being fired.

It works the other way too I guess. It makes it harder to be fired because some catty c*nt doesn’t like you. However, in the public space its typically hard to be fired anyway so the union protection is redundant.

“You are a great teacher babe, here is your award, I love you don’t ever change… now leave”

The teacher unions are just awesome!

Does this mean that the unions care jacksquat about the kids? I think it does.

Probably because God told him to–which is the way many of his decisions are made–God speaks to him (like ancient Ramses).

Nice, spoken like a true liberal. Don’t let the facts get in your way of your opinion tadcf.

tadcf,

Even for a liberal that’s a half-assed statement. Try again, try real hard to say something not hackneyed and stupid.

OH, Elrond, leave him be.
Leftists are completely ignorant of the things that they criticize and ALMOST completely ignorant of the things that they support.
That being said, it leaves him quite in a bind to speak intelligently.

You are a serious idiot. Your life must suck greatly. I almost feel bad for you.

Even worse than this are the provably bad teachers which cannot be fired. They are kept on the payroll, year after year, even though they are no longer allowed to teach.

They are moved to “administration”.

or kept in rooms where they get to play around or sleep or color or do whatever. It is disgusting.

i thought they kept teaching….hence all the ‘tards in the usa (but it helps with public support for unions).

There in lies the problem wiht unions. Last hired first fired no matter what. This proves that Gov Walker is on the right path. If those with in the public unions where forced to measure up like the rest of us and do a good job, she would still be in the class room while some one who wasnt getting the job done would be out looking for work.

And people wonder why our schools don’t measure up, no matter how much money is poured into the system. Sub-par teachers need to be taught a lesson. Governor Scott Walker deserves an A.

I would say….A+

A lousy teacher gets to skate through the good years accumulated years under his or her belt and gets retained during the bad years when people need to be let go in order to be lean and still take care of the kids… whereas a good teacher gets hired, doesn’t have the time to accumulate a lot of years and gets fired even though she should stay in order to help with the lean time and take care of the kids…

Great.

If any of these people say they care for the kids they are lying. One of the bosses admitted this was about power not about education.

We have state governors with way more spine than our President.

Since he is an enemy of the United States, I think it’s a damned good thing he’s also spineless, and fairly incompetent. That is why I think he is a lessor evil than Hildabeast, she would have slowly, steadily turned up the heat so the “frog” of public opinion would not have become alarmed and taken to the streets.

She got the sack because of union rules. Nothing more, nothing less. If you are low on the Totem Pole, you are the 1st to go.
