Olbermann suspended indefinitely without pay for Democrat contributions

by editor on November 5, 2010

UPDATE: This just in from CNN.com:

Keith Olbermann, MSNBC’s primetime firebrand host, has been suspended indefinitely for violating the ethics policies of his employer earlier this year when he donated to three Democrats seeking federal office, MSNBC announced Friday.

“I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay,” MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who’s ever watched his show, but MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann kicked in cash to the campaign coffers of three different Democrats just before the election. And it may have been against the rules at NBC.

keith-olbermann

Can't keep it quiet, Keith. Campaign finance disclosure documents reveal the truth.

Politico.com has the details of the donations:

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann made campaign contributions to two Arizona members of Congress and failed Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway ahead of Tuesday’s election — a potential violation of NBC ethics policies.

Olbermann, who acknowledged the contributions in a statement to POLITICO, made the maximum legal donations of $2,400 apiece to Conway and to Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords. He donated to the Arizona pair on Oct. 28 — the same day that Grijalva appeared as a guest on Olbermann’s “Countdown” show.

… NBC has a rule against employees contributing to political campaigns, and a wide range of news organizations prohibit political contributions — considering it a breach of journalistic independence to contribute to the candidates they cover.

He’s impartial. He’s independent. He’s unbiased. He’s totally full of shit. And now he may be unemployed.

I don’t know if this was a publicity stunt or they are trying to get rid of him because this has to be one of the dumbest reason to suspend a guy who makes his living talking about politics and openly supporting democrats and liberals on his show.

So I will go into conspiratorial mode. My thinking is the MSM will use this incident to attack FOX. They will start talking about Olbermann getting suspended then the conversation will gradually turn to: “What about FOX?” “What about O’reilly, What about Beck?, What about Hannity?” I’m sure they will eventually find some sort of numbers related to FOX and use them in the conversation incessantly.

I hope I’m wrong, but I really hate the media and know if they can attack someone or something on the right, they will.

Unfortunately Joe, you are wrong, and they’ve already started bashing FOX. 20 minutes after I posted this story to my Facebook account, I had about 5 lib friends of mine start talking about “What about Fox”, like it was orchestrated. I swear the liberals get a weekly newsletter from the DNC telling them the talking points for the upcoming week.

So, I am now in the frame of mind that this was all planned- Starting with Uberjerk. He was in on it from day one.

The white guys and Eugen Robinson were pretty biased but I think one should be able to donate to what one desires to. Now giving the donks tens of millions of free propaganda not so much.

I have been saying all along that Olbermann is mentally and emotionally disturbed.MSNBC WORKS FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.Olbermann,Maddow,Schultz,Matthews,Mitchell,O’Donnell, and a new idiot Cenk are all part of the Democratic attack machine. They hate Republicians and Conservatives.Olbermann should be fired for all his hatred. This is great news.
It should be noted that ‘I hate the media’ is doing great work.

You forgot to say “they hate America!!” Thats the big problem. Now if they didn’t hate America, then they would be fired like Juan Williams.

MSNBC is thinning the herd. I’d bet the network wasn’t bothered by Olbermann’s contributions to Democrats but saw them as an excuse to dump one of its bigger losers. Maddow, Matthews and the other twits who infest the network should be very careful right now, low ratings might cost their jobs.

BTW: Right now it’s all rage and uproar at the leftie blogs. Check out the Democratic Underground, the DUmmies don’t know whether to shit or go blind.

This is nothing new is it? The Dems have been that way for decades (at least).

I think Comcast is behind it. Perhaps as an attempt to not look overbearing, they may have been behind vetting the people and trimming the bad branches without actually coming out and doing it themselves. Who knows Comcast may have placed some pressure on NBC or NBC may have felt it was necessary to do something about the idiots if Comcast is not being very nice about negotiations. I dont think Comcast is going to be okay with mediocrity.

As for the liberal blogs do you think they would be so unhappy if it was …. Beck or O’Reilly? Of course not! Only liberals get to be gross and disgusting or unethical.

First of all, I call BS! When, oh when, did NBC ever have any ‘ethics policies’?

I think Keithy might get the upper hand on a lawsuit against MSDNC…

Maybe not. If this was part of his contract, & we have been told that this is a no-no, he really has no case. He could be fired for cause & he would get no buyout for the 2 years he has left on his contract. If donating to political campaigns is against the rules at NBC-U, & he violated that rule, he has nothing. Also, he may be on thin ice there anyway, there have been plenty of reports/rumors coming out about his diva behaviour. More then a few are bored with his act, & management might look at his inability to make any real dent vs O’Reilly & try going with someone who is lower maintainence for lesser pay, but getting the same results. It will be fun to watch.

DB you are correct. BUT remember this is NBC/GE. One of the most liberal groups around. I predict he’s back early next week.
I was never able to figure out what they were thinking, putting him on during half-time on Sunday Night Football. Football is as blue-collar-conservative as it gets. Did they really think he was going to convert us? Between him on Sunday nights, and Tony Cornhusker on Mondays, I recorded a lot of college games to watch during that time.

This may involve ComCast as well, they are awaiting regulatory approval of their purchase of NBC-U & MSNBC. GE may be asked by ComCast to clear out his $8million a year ass out 2 years early for cause & save $16million, then again, maybe not. This 1 will take time to figure out.

Vic

Maybe. But I see ComCast as one of the best run groups around. Many (most??) cable companies are having troubles. (Charter, the local cable co, has already filed bankruptcy. I’m on FiOS) I suspect ComCast has this well thought out. Broadcast companies, in general are in free fall. And NBC is leading the way. I do expect changes, but not quite yet.

Stay tuned!

First, I can’t stand Keith I see him on TV I about vomit. That said, I could see MSLSD dumping him for contributing to Republicans but Democrats? I’d think they’d put him in for Nobel Peace Prize for that. I think they were looking for an excuse to dump him because his ratings are in the toilet. We’ll have to see what happens the next few days, but MSLSD would have an easier time sending their whole HQ to the Moon than trying to make themselves look fair and balanced, which is totally laughable.

CO2. Pretty close to what my comments were going to be, so I’ll just say, “Well put.”
But, I wont miss him because I never watch MSDNC, but too see another a-hole out of a job is always fun.

Apply this policy across the board and there would be nobody working at at NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, PBS…Well maybe the sanitation workers would still be able to stay on. Heck, theyd probably do a better job running the stations than those in charge now.

Aawww,.. this pleases me! No more story time, thank you MSNBC. Now I actually might hang on before I click that button just to hear how things are going over in their little world. It could possibly improve their ratings for 1.5 seconds, but I don’t mind, one sacrifice for another. Hmmmm, maybe by 2012 they will be running up the middle?!!

Furthermore, for such a super intellect, keith sure proved that his arrogance was bigger than the sum of his gray matter. What an idiot! He must have thought that since his bosses at GE gave often to barry and company, he could do it too-after all, they are a paid propaganda machine for the left. I guess in the end, that type of overt conflict of interest must be stopped. I LOVE IT!
Goodbye forever keith, my little yellow friend!
