Sweeeeet: Saccharin doesn’t cause cancer anymore

by editor on January 9, 2011

If you chew sugar-free gum, swill diet soda or attempt to kill that dragon breath with mouthwash, you probably use Saccharin. Fact is, it’s found in a lot of products you probably use everyday.

saccharin sweet-n-low

On one hand, the EPA said Saccharin was a carcinogen. On the other hand, they said, "Sweet!"

But how can that be, you say. Didn’t the EPA tell us that Saccharin causes cancer?

To tell you the truth, we would have said the same thing. But CNN has what we would call shocking news:

The Environmental Protection Agency is taking saccharin off its list of hazardous substances, saying the crystalline powder “is no longer considered a potential hazard to human health.”

So it used to cause cancer, but no longer does? We don’t mind admitting that we’re confused by this. But if the EPA has just decided that saccharin isn’t a carcinogen, why have they allowed it to be used in used in so many products for the last 30 years?

Saccharin was first listed as a hazardous waste in 1980 after studies in rats showed the sweetener caused higher rates of bladder cancer. The EPA subsequently determined it to be a “potential human carcinogen”. Yet two decades later, the National Toxicology Program and International Agency for Research on Cancer reversed that classification after scientists failed to link saccharin consumption to cancer in humans.

Saccharin was removed from their listings of hazardous substances. The EPA has now followed suit, after a petition was filed earlier this year by the Calorie Control Council, an advocacy association that claims to represent the low-calorie food and beverage industry.

Well, there you have it. When the authoritative Calorie Control Council speaks, the Obama administration listens.

Consider this just another example of the power of Big Artificial Sweetener.

If the GOP runs out of ideas for cutting spending the EPA would be a great place to start. May Dick Nixon roast in hell for creating the EPA.

The study that “showed: that saccharine was carcinogenic was flawed, and was never able to be replicated, a requirement in legitimate research. The media ran with the initial study results, as did the government, with virtually no evidence to support the claim. Much like the oft touted study “showing” that MMR vaccines and autism are linked. The study was flawed in so many ways (small sample, anecdotal, no control, fraudulent reporting) yet many parents, desperate for an answer to the puzzle of autism, took it as gospel truth. Now many children are sickening and even dying because of Measles, whooping cough, and potentially rubella affecting pregnancies. As my Dad used to say, “Figures don’t lie, but liars can figure.”

Does anybody remember the soft drink called TAB? I used to like that drink before the EPA determined that Saccharin was actually a carcongenic. I doubted it then and I doubt it now.

Hmm, I remember the “study” that prompted this. Lab mice/rats were given doses of saccharin 1,500 X the normal for years.
Surprisingly, they developed health problems. Who’d a thunk it.
The EPA is a political tool of the left. Appointed, unconfirmed and unaccountable.
They are on a mission to destroy this country along with dear leader Barry.
BTW, their latest stupidity is to attempting to destroy the Texas gas and oil industry with asshat legislation.
Try to enforce it in Texas.
BTW (again) Texas was the only state to be ASKED to join the Union.
The EPA can kiss my carbon-emitting arse.

Same for me…I’ve never used any of the sugar substitutes, even Splenda, as I cannot stomach the taste.
