"Run and hide" is the default position of the left on personal defense in general, including armed home invaders.

I think when he says "run and hide" he's talking to the civilians present. I got no problem with that. He's telling them even if they're armed they should try to avoid conflict.
As for the "defensive" stuff, that's basically the general philosophical theory of the difference between a police force and a military force. I got no problem with that either. Of course the police have to go on offense sometimes but even when they do it's a situation where bad guys have started it and the police need to end it before innocent civilians get hurt. That's why if police get a bank robber trapped in an empty bank they'll wait a long long time before trying to enter... whereas a soldier would simply call in an airstrike and level the building.
I kind of agree with what you say, normally I'd agree 100%, but this guy's a NY Elitist Liberal. I think his agenda is different.
