That's because the Fords were from Grand Rapids, Michigan. We're good people here for the most part and that's what the country needed at that point in its history: a good man in the Oval Office. Jerry was the graduation speaker at both my high school graduation (when he was a congressman) and my college graduation (when he was president). I hated listening to the man. He had to be the most boring speaker who ever lived. But I never doubted that his heart was in the right place. I doubt very much, with today's lower standards in Washington and the endemic lying that goes on among politicians, that a man of Ford's caliber could become Speaker now. Boehner, for example, isn't fit to carry Jerry Ford's jockstrap.

That aside. Former President Gerald R. Ford was a man too good for the office. And as a couple who authentically and transparently were in love and loved. I've not known a better leader.
