Evan McMullin basically tied with Trump and Hillary in Utah. For a guy with no party, whose whole selling point is he’s neither of them, the guy is doing surprisingly well. And given how conservative and Republican Utah is, Trump is doing surprisingly poorly.

Rasmussen isn't a real poll? I think you have to look at the question the poll asks. This one asked likely voters who they were going to vote for. That's pretty straightforward. If the poll asks whether people prefer Trump or Clinton, in Utah I'm sure Trump would be 17% up.
This is EXACTLY the plan. Before McMullin announced, Beck was discussing a "Never Trump" plan, that you are basically seeing here. Having someone who could stuff Trump in a few mountain west states. Utah, Idaho, & Nevada, with sizeable LDS populations. The idea is to be a spoiler & deny Trump the electoral college votes that go with those states.
