  • My dad was one of nine brothers all growing up without a mother (she died in childbirth having her last baby.) I have a photo of eight of the brothers standing with my grandfather, my dad the oldest and his brother Bob the next oldest. When my dad was preparing to ship out for Europe in WWII, on maneuvers in Tennessee, he got word that his first child was born back in Michigan and at the same time that his brother Bob, a pilot, had been shot down over Europe. (Because of the double whammy news, the Army let him go home for a couple days to be with his family.) Every time I look at that Depression-era photo, I think of my dad's full, excellent, glorious life, the grandchildren and great grandchildren, the technological wonders he saw invented, living to 102 years old, being adored by everybody... and how much his brother Bob missed. There he is in that photo, a young man staring at the camera, everything in front of him... and he got to experience none of it.
