i'm betting OD. If so, I fail to work up any sympathy for filthy rich entertainers, athletes, etc, that heavily use drugs and then kack off at an early age.
Well, since the release of the info that he was treated for an OD the other day, that's a pretty safe bet, BUT since drb posted that the official cause of death was complications from pneumonia, I'm betting AIDS. Those dirty needles can be a bitch.
From what I've heard over the years, he was a pompous little dickhead...wouldn't let people look at him...that kinda stuff. But he was talented...great writer and a better guitar player than most people knew. And he died too soon. RIP...

I'm guessing heart attack. He was feeling shitty, went to a hospital, cancelled a couple performances, came back and said he was fine. You generally don't die from the flu. The "feeling shitty" business was probably a cardiovascular problem.

Watched the video at the link, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." I had no idea Prince was such a virtuoso with an electric guitar. That was awesome. May he rest in peace.
Never was a fan but I checked on the old 'puter for Prince songs. I should have expanded my interests when I was younger because the guy was a master on the axe! He was also a hell of a song writer for other performers. Looking at his bio it amazed me how many songs he wrote for others or helped in the production of their music. Rest in peace Prince. Sorry I didn't understand your talent while you were with us.

Prince produced, arranged, composed and played all 27 instruments on his 1978 debut album.
I just heard a guy on the radio who called in claiming he was his guitar tech for years. He said his recording style was unusual. He'd call in the crew at all hours of night or day. Whenever a song "hit him" he had to record it as he didn't know how to read or write music! He said Prince would start with the percussion track. Then move on to keyboard or guitar. Once he had all the music recorded he'd kick everyone out and then work on the vocals alone. Apparently he was self conscious of his singing voice. Supposedly he was an even better drummer than guitar player. The guy could've been a crank caller, but he sounded like he knew what he was talking about.
I was never really a fan, but I recall the time he did the Super Bowl halftime show in 2007. That was the first time I ever realized he was that talented. Supposedly he has written some chart toppers for other artists as well. Remember one hit wonder Shithea'd O'Connor? Prince wrote it.
Prince was extraordinarily talented. Whether or not someone likes his music is a matter of personal taste. And yes, he did allow his fame to affect him badly.
Right after his first album came out, I had the luck to do an impromptu photo shoot with him in Los Angeles. I'd never heard of him, but he certainly treated me well.
He wrote for others as well. Some people don't realize how far across the music spectrum he reached. He was a very talented artist.
