Prince’s entourage to be questioned over alleged overdose on painkillers during flight. If all this is true the guy should have been in a hospital.

  • Medications don't work the same for everyone... i can split a small dose of Vicodin and be fine... and yes, for some peeps, we get a rush of ambition from it. I no longer take opiates, due to pissing THC cos i prefer a more natural method of combating anxiety... anxiety increases pain, and pain is what i have lots and lots of after my car accident going on 14 years ago. Combat the reasons for pain, not the pain... (Drink lots of water, get enough rest, exercise, eat right, keep busy, etc... those go a long way to help relieve anxiety, thus pain, believe it or not.)

    No sense of doing opiates for the duration of my life, i figure, so i am not fighting the decision to refuse me Vicodin, etc.

    Lyrica and the other similar drugs were given to me, and guess what? The doctors, what with all their info, screwed up cos Lyrica et all is NOT a good idea for someone with BiPolar who often goes into a manic phase.

    I lost an 80K/year job over that... it turned me into a crazed person, as if being manic wasn't itself crazy enough.

    Drugs are drugs. They react differently with different people. But as for opiates, they are too easy to get hooked on... and if the opiate part don't kill you, the tylenol part will.

    Get off all drugs as best as ya can. I shudder whenever an older person (and i am getting there, myself) tells me they take 15 different scripts just to stay alive. My grandmother took quite a few, and yet, she eventually died anyway, plus she was nuts by then and drove us all crazy.

    It's all about the money and keeping the medical profession alive and well. Of course, nobody wants to die if they can help it. Luckily, this works in tandem pretty well.

    • WOW. You sue that Doctor yet? Lyrics was developed for and is an anti-convulsant for treating epilepsy. They just found out during testing that it also great for nerve pain, particularly diabetic nerve pain. It wasn't made for treating nerve pain, but as anyone who watched TV will tell you, that is what they are pushing the drug as. Bi-polar disorders should be a red flag for a Doctor not to prescribe this drug for you.

  • Michael Jackson, Prince, Rush Limbaugh... painkiller addiction seems to be worse for the rich because they can afford to buy enough to hurt themselves.

  • Ill tell you what, those painkillers are nothing to joke about. I had a laminectomy microdiscectomy between L3/4 two weeks ago. I was given 10/325 vicodin for pain management. While I haven't gotten what I would consider a 'high' from this drug, it does give me a 'satisfying sense of well being' about ten minutes after I take a dose. It usually only lasts 10-15 minutes and then the pain killing aspect of the drug takes over and relieves the pain. If I had access to this OTC ( or a personal doctor that would prescribe whatever I wanted like the stars do) I could see it become a potential problem.

    New regulations have made it so hard for doctors to prescribe these drugs, it is difficult for people that medically need them, to actually get them. So much so, that street sources are drying up and heroin use is increasing in this country at an alarming rate. I think the DEA, HHS and other alphabet soup agencies should concentrate real hard on these high dollar docs that celebs use and come down hard on them when they abuse their hippocratic oath just to satisfy high dollar clients. Note I used 'clients' and not 'patients.' There's a difference and IMO, these high profile celeb deaths are the direct result of a Doctor/client relationship as opposed to a Doctor/patient arrangement.

    • I took Tramadol several years ago for some back pain I was having. I remember describing to my doctor that "sense of well being" you describe. I hoarded the last few tablets from that prescription, and would take one when I got a sinus headache. I didn't know drugs could be that good.

      • Tramadol is one that is on their 'safe' list. Warnings do state that it is addictive. I was initially given this when I blew the disc. It didn't work for me, made me sweat, made my ears pound upon standing, eliminated my peripheral perception and it took forever for me to get a stream flowing when I took it! It is supposed to be almost equally addictive as opiate based drugs, yet they haven't restricted the ability to prescribe it freely.

        Since we're discussing drugs, I'll throw out a PSA on Lyrica. DON'T TAKE IT!!!!!!!!! I took it over a year for neck problems from a bike wreck. It worked brilliantly, except side effects started to pile up after about 9 months, so I quit taking it. I stopped taking it early January and 2 weeks later I couldn't hold down food. This went on for over a month and I lost about 25 pounds. I finally put two and two together; I took a capsule of Lyrica and poof, the nausea was gone in 10 minutes. I told my Doc and he had me start taking it again, only slowly tapering off the drug over a 4 week period. I am still having occasional bouts of nausea which can be instantly cured with a dose of Lyrica. If it works for you and you don't have side effects, go for it. Just know that if you take it long term, you might have withdrawals if you decide to stop taking it.

        • I had tramadol a couple of months ago - had what a previous doctor left of a cyst that got infected dug out of my back which looked like Crater Lake. Same effect. Took like forever to take a whiz. I still have some left. Didn't do much for the pain anyway.

          • It's amazing the different effects the same meds can have on different people. Look at the three of us, we all had different reactions.

        • BTW, I am in the process of trying to pass a kidney stone. I don't think heroin would help with that pain!

          • Stay away from Opiates....Not only will you have a kidney stone, you'll get constipated..Thats why Heroin users are always skinny, they don't eat cause they can't poop..

          • I had a kidney stone about 19 years ago, and was told that once you have one, you are more susceptible to them, OH JOY!! I am fine with the Tramadol, which I wasn't taking when I had the last stone, it does help with pain management and doesn't keep me from working with power tools, even at the dose I take.

        • OK, I wish I could confirm both of your experiences with Vicodin and Tramadol, but I just can't.
          I injured my back at work 25+ years ago, and was given extra strength Vicodin and Flexeril to take for the pain. NOTHING!!!
          I was given Percoset for pain after having oral surgery to remove all 4 wisdom teeth. They had to break the teeth into pieces to get them out, because the roots were dog-legged and twisted. Percoset did NOTHING!
          So, apparently, I am highly resistant or immune to, the effects of Vicodin and Percoset.
          After I had my discectomy and fusion in C5-6 3 months ago, the doctor must have never gotten the message from the nurse that I can't take Vicodin, and that is what he wrote a scrip for. I went 24 hours after surgery with NO PAIN MEDS!!! Then he gave me 2mg Dilaudid tabs to take for pain, which didn't help at all, even when taken with Tramadol and Etodolac!
          Now, Tramadol.
          I take 100 mg 3 times a day, just in order to keep my neck and back pain slightly manageable. It is the first pain med that has helped me at all.
          BTW, it is now a more tightly regulated drug, and you cannot get more than a 30 day refill at one time, and you can only be prescribed 3 months worth at a time without taking a drug test. As a result, I get a 3 month scrip, 1 month at a time, and have to do a pee test every 3 months. All because I have chronic pain.

          • You might need morphine. If dilaudid won't help you, I doubt much anything will. I also hate to say it after my previous post, but you might look into Lyrica. I've got a disc issue at c5/6 too and Lyrica really works well for cervical pain. The side effects were just not for me. You might be able to take it with zero complications. Gabapentin might help too. It is very similar to Lyrica, but a lot cheaper since generic is available. I had to stop taking it because it messed up my short term memory

            Ive got a friend that gets no relief from anything but morphine. He had to take early retirement and go on disability as a result. He's got a morphine pump installed in his hip and tops that off with 7-8 oz of vodka to sleep at night. I think it's all piled up on him and he's hopelessly addicted to all the things that will likely kill him before his time.

            Pop, be careful with that tramadol and your kidneys. Having a stone might be a sign of something else going on in there. Drink as much water as you can tolerate while taking any painkillers. I'm pushing 2 gallons of fluid a day right now and am still dehydrated.

          • Yes, I do drink at least a gallon of cranberry juice and green tea a day. The water around here isn't drinkable, and I refuse to pay the prices for little plastic bottles of tap water from somewhere else.
            I was given Gabapentin for a while, the highest dose they could, but it was also useless. The other thing with it is that according to the VA, it is only approved for use as an antidepressant, and I have no desire to have that tag on my charts.

          • Gabapentin is most commonly prescribed for epilepsy. I guess the VA Docs aren't authorized to prescribe it for neuropathic pain so, depression it is! Ask them about Lyrica then. If your choices are morphine or Lyrica, your best bet is Lyrica. I was dosed really high on Lyrica at 450 mg a day. My new Doctor said that was an insanely high level since 300 mg is considered the highest dose and even that isn't a good idea. They step it up gradually, just like gabapentin, until you get relief. Some of them believe that gabapentin is the generic equivalent of Lyrica, but it isn't; they are definitely different and I could tell the difference when taking them. Make sure your Doctor understands that if you are interested in trying it.

            I guess you've tried meloxicam? I had the best results using meloxicam daily with low dose of vicodin. I'd take a 5/325 vicodin and split it; one half in the mid AM and one half later in the afternoon. Combined with 10 mg of meloxocam and I was good to go. I had to stop taking it because the geniuses at the alphabet agencies limited my Docs ability to prescribe vicodin, even at that low of a dose.

            And holy cow, you're taking 300 mg of Tramadol a day! Do you have trouble peeing? I took 150mg a day and after 3 days it would take me about 5 minutes to pee! It funny how we're all the same basic carbon based animal, yet the same drugs affect us all in many different ways.

          • Yes, I have tried meloxicam, another useless option for me.
            I don't have problems peeing for the most part, but in the morning when I first get up, I do take a little longer to get going. The odds of the VA prescribing Lyrica are slim, unless it's the last resort. They hate using name brand drugs.

          • Tylenol 3 or 4? They contain a natural opiate, unlike the 'codones' which are synthetics. Similar, but again, not the same. It works so-so for me, not as good as the synthetics. If the synthetics don't work for you, maybe the natural stuff will? We're sounding a lot like a couple grannies at the old folks home, bitching about their ailments and all the drugs needed for said ailments….

          • LOL!! My paternal grandfather had a lazy susan on his kitchen table with all his meds on it. It was full of shit I never heard of as a kid. I don't think I've ever had the natural codeine, my mother was allergic to it, and I told my doc. She said it's possible I could be, and not to chance it.
