One more on this war thing. This is the last few minutes of John Wayne in the Green Berets. And it says it like it was. We were there to help the innocent who could not protect themselves and because of government bullshite we abandoned them. And millions died. Billions of dollars wasted, thousands of lives lost and for what? Nothing. But the Duke says it at the end of the movie, what all of us thought. Bad case of insomnia tonight, can't sleep. Read the news this morning, learned the Gunny had passed, so I looked and found this scene from Full Metal Jacket.
When I was in basic my DI wasn't quite that bad but he was a tough SOB. Master Chief Yoie, I'll never forget that assholes name. And I will always admire him for putting me on track to be a man, a fighter and a good sailor instead of being a wild teenager who thought he was a big man.
I had QMC Kim. A Korean guy in Dago 1958. I was just turned 17. He was at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41. Tough and demanding but I'll always respect the man.
That is the scene I thought about when I first read this news. I really enjoyed that movie when it first came out and I was the same age as the recruits. I have the DVD in my collection but I have not been able to watch it for years because of the language and violence. Unfortunately I have a 60 year old Lumbee Indian "princess" living next door to me and she could run Mr Ermey or anyone else off her property with her mouth. I will trade her for anything you want to dispose of.

I couldn't watch movies like Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Born on The Fourth of July, for years after they came out. The memories, the rage, the sorrow, it all eat at me too bad until the late 1990's and I finally made peace with myself and started watching the movies about Vietnam. From John Wayne in The Green Berets to Gunny Ermey to Tom Cruise to Tom Hanks, I watch those movies by myself. Ain't nothing funny about watching a grown man cry.
I think I could watch Apocalypse Now again. Marlon Brando was soooo good in that. And I'd love to hear Robert Duval say "There's nothing like the smell of napalm in the morning" one more time.

H stands for to Hell with it lets go! You were a squid, you ought to know that! The Coast Guard motto is Semper Paratus, Always Ready. I have lived with that motto for almost 46 years now, never forgot it.
You know one of the requirements to join he Coast Guard is you have to be 6ft tall? That way if the boat sinks you can walk ashore! HAHAHA. You squids don't know crap. (snicker)
