  • Kind of a bunghole thing to do IMO.

    though the typical Prius driver does SEEM to have their heads up and locked. I just don't get out of their way when they make some 'Ahole entitled move' on the freeway anymore. I hit the horn, veer toward them and try to hit them if they are cutting into my lane. So far I haven't managed to 'catch' one yet; I bet if I didnt warn them with the horn I would tho'. I no longer go on defense with stupid drivers, I go on offense.

    The globull warming nuts are at it again. I read on another site where some guy tweeted out it being 25 in Minnesota and 40 degrees in the Antarctica is proof of climate change. I guess the dude is too dumb to understand it is summer time south of the equator this time of year.

    I need some of that globull warming right now! 17 degrees heading to a high of 30 today, I froze my butt off walking to Mom's house to check on her. One brother called, he said it was 7 at his house. He has a big F-250 4X4 diesel, he forgot to plug it in and it won't start. lol Another brother called, it's -7 at his house and he got 15 inches of snow in the last two days. And people think New Mexico is a frigging desert? hahaha

  • Nothing from nothing, Hubs bought a 2014 Prius due to an 80 mile daily commute, $3.60+/gallon gas in IL with huge gas taxes. 4.5 years later said Prius has 180K miles with zero mechanical issues still getting 50 mpg.The Prius goes 500+ miles on a tank of gas for $19. It's hard to hate a car like that. Just sayin'. I drive a big Lincoln Town Car that I love (and won't be able to get another one when this one wears out) since I used to own a limo company. They are durable and comfy and when gas is cheap, like now, I pay $38 to fill it to go about 350 miles. I've paid up to $65 to fill a Town Car and I love them, but I'm seriously considering a hybrid if I live long enough to need another car.

    • Memory Lane time. I had a neighbor several years ago who drove by my house in one of those Lincoln Town Cars. She had acquired it at a government surplus auction and liked to believe Richard Nixon had once ridden in it. Nan had been a singer in a popular music group that I had never heard of and become the girlfriend of an electrical contractor that designed Tommy Franks command center during the first Iraq war. The first story she told me about herself placed her in the White House with her boyfriend and some top dogs - including the President's dog - which she saw peeing on the polished marble floor. She attempted to warn her boyfriend of the danger and he just hushed her up. 20 seconds later a Secret Service guy stepped in the dog pee and fell right on his ass. Nan and Tom eventually got married and lived a few miles from me until it didn't work for them anymore. She would drive by my house and wave from that huge Town Car and I would occasionally cross paths with her in her black leather trench coat at Food Lion. I have no idea what became of her and that car. She always pointed out that it was not just an ordinary Town Car. It was some sort of special edition. Good luck keeping yours on the road.

      • I take very good care of it, the livery industry taught me the value of preventative maintenance is a hurry. So many deathtraps on the road today and one out of every three cars on the road is uninsured--and illegal aliens never have valid driver licenses either. They are great cars, when Lincoln stopped making them in 2011 they left the livery industry with nothing to replace it. When they run through the supply of privately owned low mileage TCs they are up the proverbial creek. SUVs ride like trucks--because they ARE trucks and when the industry has to make the jump to Mercedes, the fares will skyrocket. I don't know WTF Ford was thinking when they stopped making TCs since they were selling 100K units a year just to the livery industry and the MK series are crap and they are selling less than 12K units a year. Morons.

    • I gotta agree with JP on this. Lithium is a mineral, it has to be dug out of the ground just like copper. Then it takes a tremendous amount of natural gas and electrical power to process it into a useable product. Then more energy to make a battery out of it. Then more energy to keep the thing charged up. How is that "helping the environment"?

      Keep your big old Lincoln, take it to a reputable shop and get it completely overhauled when the time comes. You will save tons of money on car payments, which will help with the cost of gas too. And you will be far more comfortable than when riding around in a shoe box a semi can run over without feeling the bump.

          • I love those!! I'm on my last ever iphone, when it craps out I am buying a cheap flip phone that makes phone calls and nothing else. I finally figured out how to stop all the scam/sales calls too--I put it on "Do Not Disturb" and allow my contacts ONLY to bypass it. Works great!! I leave my iPad on airplane mode and get messages to update and back it up but I don't. I also deleted onedrive from my computer and changed my computer password and didn't update the apparently automatic microsoft account so that microsoft can't get a copy of everything that goes through my computer but I cannot figure out how to delete Cortana whom I would cheerfully choke to death if I could!!

          • I'm not supporting Apple any longer. Five iPhones is enough Apple for me--particularly with their bashing of MY President and censorship of conservative speech. I vote with my feet and my checkbook--which is why I'm moving out of Illinois the day hubs retires from Scott AFB--where we were BRAC-ked in 2007. I'm tired of supporting government corruption and organized crime in Illinois--and freezing my ass off too. The taxes are horrific here and will only get worse when that piece of shit Priztker becomes Madigan's butt boy in a few days. The BEST thing that could happen to Illinois is for Mike Madigan to drop dead. Illinois is finished.

            Come to Texas. We're getting our voter pool diluted by lefties coming here for employment. You would think these folks would wonder why their job went from a blue state, to a red state and take a few minutes to ponder why.           • As much as I love Texas and Texans, we own a paid for home in Baton Rouge Louisiana on the edge of LSU and that's where we are going. Hubs is a LA native, I'm a FL native and the weather in BRLA is like north Florida. Baton Rouge is New Orleans for half the cost, 25% of the tourists, 10% of the crime, and we have LSU. I can walk from my front door to Tiger Stadium in about 25 minutes and I fell in love with BRLA the first time my hubs took me there when we were still dating, a very long time ago. We are literally walking distance (5-8 mins) from 30 great restaurants, and we are going to do a little bit of remodeling with the money from our Illinois house which is also nearly paid for--the bathrooms (all 3) the kitchen and enclose the carport into a garage, get a big fat reverse mortgage, invest it, and live there till we die. We had a whole house generator put in a couple of years ago so we will always have power no matter what the weather and I love the city--it has such charm. It's also the capitol of Louisiana and a sitting US Senator is one of my neighbors, so plenty of politics as well!

      • I don't need to take it to a shop. I can do it myself. I owned a huge limo biz for 20 years with my own mechanics since at any given time I had 300 cars on the road. However it is always refreshing to hear from an expert mechanic. My current one is a 2011--last year they were made with 75K miles. The cancer will kill me long before I wear it out which in my experience is usually around 350K miles depending.

    • 1. The cost of the Prius was subsidized by the government which means the rest of us helped pay for it. Which any reasonable person should find at least objectionable if not obscene.

      2. If you factor in the price of the car and the price of replacing the batteries when they wear out and the risk you take driving around in a fire hazard and the cost of recharging it when you plug it into the wall, there's no way the savings on gasoline for an electric car is enough to recoup the extra costs involved in owning one. This calculation has been done often enough to make it settled science.

      3. Too many Prius-owning assholes coast along in the left lane with two miles of traffic backed up behind them just so they don't have to touch their brakes and negatively affect their mileage. Makes me want to strangle them.

      • You are incorrect JP, here's why: 1. There was a limit of how much the government would set aside to subsidize each model as a tax credit and there hasn't been a tax credit on a Prius since the 2008 model year. The Nissan Leaf still has a tax credit since they didn't sell well. It's NOT a plug in, it's a gas powered hybrid.

        2. The batteries do not wear out, the contacts get dirty and can be cleaned DIY by anyone let alone my hubs, a double
        degreed LSU mechanical and nuclear engineer. I know several dozen people who have 400-500K miles on their original battery packs with no issues. Toyota wants to sell you a new $4000 battery pack but cleaning the contacts are all it needs. There's a video on YouTube that shows how to do it, it's fairly simple. Let's face it--no one buys a car that gets 50 mpg that doesn't do a shitload of driving.

        3. You've never ridden in a car with my husband. He drives like Mario Andretti at the Brickyard. You owe me an apology about the tax credit thing.

        • I didn't say anything about a tax credit. I said the government subsidizes them. (Although plug-in Priuses still do receive a tax credit I believe.) The government subsidizes them in so many various ways, I've seen academics who study the issue admit even they can't keep track of all the sundry and devious ways they are subsidized. One way they do it is to REQUIRE a certain MPG for a manufaturer's entire fleet, which means the manufacturer sells the dumb hybrids and EVs at a loss in order to get his fleet MPG down where the law requires it. (And of course they never factor in the cost of charging batteries when they figure those fleet mileages.) The fleet MPG was one reason GM kept backing the Volt even though nobody was buying them. They were practically paying people to take them so they could claim them for the fleet MPG. The loss on all these dumb cars is then factored into the cost the rest of us pay for our normal cars. (Prius is the only hybrid that supposedly started earning a profit AFTER TEN YEARS OF MAKING AND SELLING THEM but I don't believe it for a second, and I'd bet my left nut the plug-ins don't make a profit. Anyway, ask yourself why they would keep making something for ten years that wasn't making a profit.) Another way they subsidize them is to make the regular cars the rest of us drive less efficient by making us burn more and more of that bullshit ethanol, which is more expensive, gets lower mileage, and ruins our engines. All three of those things, of course, affect the comparison with hybrids and make the hybrids seem to perform relatively better financially speaking. Battery factories received enormous government subsidies from the federal government, from state governments, even from local governments. California has its own multitude of government subsidies for hybrids and EVs which are almost as Byzantine as the federal subsidies. Nobody can keep track of this shit but what we do know is they are utter failures in a financial sense. And one more thing: if you think that Prius has batteries that do not wear out, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

          • You said we got a tax credit for our NON-PLUG IN Prius and strongly implied that WE were taking advantage of other taxpayers. We did NOT. I have no control over what that cocksucker obama did, but we paid full retail for the car with NO tax break. You owe me an apology.

You made a big discussion about what was simply a statement of my experience with a particular vehicle and strongly implied that due to purchase of said vehicle I was ripping off other taxpayers and all the lack of integrity that comes with it--including that I got a tax credit I didn't get. Additionally you assumed facts not in evidence--that it was a plug in which you also took umbrage with, in a public forum. It was uncalled for, rude and impugned my character--and you were wrong. That calls for a apology.

I said what I said and I think I was pretty clear about what I said: if you're driving a Prius you're driving a government-subsidized car and my money is helping pay for your vehicle.             That's exactly what you said and it isn't true because we did NOT get a tax credit. What the government does for anyone else is out of my control, but
            WE DID NOT GET A TAX CREDIT AND ARE NOT DRIVING A GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIZED CAR. You applied a general statement of something other people did to me in particular; and said YOUR money paid for my husband's car. This is not true in our case. We got no tax credit and paid 34 grand for that car. You didn't contribute a penny to in and neither did any other taxpayer and I resent that you used a public forum to accuse me of taking advantage of American taxpayers which is a lie and you know it.
            This is why you owe me an apology. You were wrong and way out of line to apply a generality to me specifically when it was not true. What happened to you? I thought we were friends--and have been since 2010 when I ran for Congress. This is not the JP I know and respected. WTF?

          • I am actually distressed that with a BA in English that I still can't think of anything nasty ENOUGH to call obama for the damage he did to the country I love enough to give my life to defend.     • Most days I drive my F-250 4X4 with a big iron cow catcher on the front of if. I don't have much problem with anyone driving one of those little shoe boxes on tires.

      • Many years ago I used to drive a big old Chrysler monstrosity that I hated but it looked like a tank and it looked like it was impregnable. Before I eventually gave it to my nephew I acquired the habit of merging onto expressways without really looking... because who cares what's coming? Whatever's coming will want to miss me and if they DON'T miss me it's gonna hurt them more than it hurts me. One day I barreled down an expressway entrance after playing basketball and hit black ice right about the time I hit 80. I was spinning like a top on a four-lane stretch of expressway, sometimes facing backwards, sometimes facing frontwards, wondering when my life was gonna start flashing before my eyes, and sorely disappointed that there wasn't more life to flash. When I finally came to a stop I was facing directly backwards and all four lanes of expressway had come to a stop so as not to come anywhere near me. THAT'S what I call getting respect. They were like a herd of cattle looking at a crazy buffalo. I leisurely backed and turned until I was facing forward again and got out of there. Nobody passed me because they still didn't want to get anywhere near me.

        • I had a 70s ish Bonneville back in the early 80s. It wasn't one of the tank model Bvilles like earlier years, but it was big. All four 1/4 panels had been crumpled (damaged before I acquired it) and two of the doors were creased. People got out of my way.
