Trump admits immigration stance negotiable

Trump admits that yes, his immigration stance is “negotiable.” This following reports that the NYTimes had an off-the-record tape recording wherein he admitted his tough public comments about immigration were for campaign purposes, not something written in stone.

  • “I would say this,” Trump added, “we will work out some system that’s fair, but we either have a country or we don’t. We need a border. We need a wall.”

    I'll take that over Rubio's position -- whatever it is today in whatever language.

      • Rubio's parents are Cuban, he speaks the Cuban kind of Spanish. I don't know about you but the only Cubans I have tried to talk to speak so fast I can't keep up, and I have been bi-lingual all my life.

        • Okay it is great that he is Bilingual, but he DOES speak English and he speaks it well. The above poster made it seem like Rubio speaks in another language and as far as I have seen him, he hasn't, but if he does it must be very seldom.

          • If you have cable you can catch his interviews on Univision. That is the only public place I have heard him speak Spanish and, like his English, he speaks it well.

          • Good for him. Being bilingual is not a bad idea in the world that we live in. People hated on Kerry for speaking French and I was like.. why? What is wrong with speaking another language?

        • Exactly. And apparently that's what Trump is saying too:

          “Would it be negotiable about the 11 million?” Hannity pressed. “Maybe let some people stay if they register in a period of time?”

          “I would say this,” Trump added, “we will work out some system that’s fair..."

          So when he gives a speech to his ignorant supporters, the 11 million have to leave the country. But when pressed a couple days ago, "we will work something out."

  • You do have to negotiate for anything you want in the real world. Very few institutions are inflexible... negotiations in of themselves are not bad... maybe visa and fence jumping over-stayers need to be kicked out if here five or fewer years. Do the math to get Mexico to pay (overall) for the wall, but also do it to Canada (if not a physical wall more people/technology) so there is equality. Maybe encourage Mexico (and Canada's) cooperation in KEEPING their citizens AND taking care that others do not stay here by providing those countries with some incentives... I don't know work it out. That is what negotiation is about.

    • But he's going to "make" Mexico pay for the wall. (Somehow. Don't ask me how. Mexico has already said no way so it seems to me it's just Trump hyperbole.) That's not the part he says he's willing to negotiate. The part he says he's flexible about is whether illegals already here have to leave. In other words, his position on immigration is exactly the same as Rubio's: amnesty is on the table... which, coincidentally, is what he's been saying for years, even if Trump supporters don't want to hear it.

      • Export or import tariffs on Mexico supposedly will be set and used to pay for the wall. Some people have to go he may need to choose a time frame if he thinks all out is not feasible but no amnesty... we will see

        • And that's where Trump shows his utter ignorance of how things work, and why he seldom delves into specifics for all these promises. The president can't set tariffs. Those things are set by treaty (NAFTA in this case) and there are international courts that would fine the shit out of the U.S. if we tried to punish Mexico with additional tariffs.

          • And all it takes is a President with some balls to get the House and Senate to change those treaties. I also don't give one bit of shit about "international courts" or what some foreigner thinks.

  • Trump has already slammed the Slimes for leaving part of the recording out, the part where he says the wall can be 2 feet shorter.

    • Whisky, all trump has to do is ask that the entire thing get released. He hasn't. Again, he's repeated his statements to other news outlets, live. On air. He is saying everything opposite of a Conservative. All you have to do is listen.

    • You have this story so twisted and mis-sourced, it's almost funny. Obviously Trump can't complain about the NYTimes because the NYTimes didn't print anything. AT ALL. Got it yet? And the "2 feet shorter" comment was made AND PLAYED (you can actually see it in the link above) on the Hannity show, which is what this whole thread was about until you came in all misinformed with your knee-jerk attempt to defend the guy no matter what. Once you get caught up on the facts here, we can discuss whether Trump is sincere about his immigration promises.

      • Cuss me all you want, bash Trump all you want, I don't care. All politicians talk about what they will do if they get elected, all of them have to negotiate to get as much done as they can after they get elected. And most of them fall into the status quo and don't do anything.

        I have lived in a border state all my life. I have seen the damage illegal immigration has done to New Mexico in the last 25 years. If Bernie Sanders was the only candidate to say his biggest priority after getting elected was to build a fence, close our borders, put an end to illegal immigration, I would vote for him. That is how strongly I feel about the problem and I am willing to give Trump a shot at getting the job done. For damn sure we cannot count on the career politicians to do anything.

        Think about it. Cruz, Rubio, none of the other candidates were saying a damn thing about illegal immigration until after they figured out Trump was gaining ground. All of them started parroting Trump, trying to cut into his popularity.

  • The TDS is strong when republicans will take the leaked report of the NYT over Trump's statements. The media has pushed the KKK story when on Friday Trump DISAVOWED Duke's non endorsement. Paul Ryno the traitor of the omnibus bill comes out with that lie too and I'm supposed to be pro RYNO? NO.

    • He's repeated those statements on air. He's repeatedly contradicted his stances, sometimes within the same sentence. He says he's pro life, but has also said he is in support of partial-birth abortions. He is pro 2A but wants to outlaw guns. In this instance, the NYT is only backing up what we already know.

      • The New York Slimes? Are you kidding me? I wouldn't believe anything printed in that rag if you paid me. They have done everything they can to smear every republican candidate since Richard Nixon was running for the office.

        • Seriously? You can't read? This isn't what the NYTimes said. This is what Trump said himself, two days ago, on the Hannity show. You can be willfully ignorant if you want, but don't try to piss in everybody else's cup and call it champagne.

    • 1) Trump's father was in the KKK. Period. After that, there's almost no more that needs to be said. But, if you think the son shouldn't be blamed for the father's sins...

      2) Trump was 33 years old and highly involved in the company when they were trying to run black people out of their apartment buildings.

      3) We don't need to take the NYTimes word for anything since Trump himself went on Hannity and, when questioned about the NYTimes rumors, admitted that deporting illegals was negotiable.

      Oh, and one more thing, that bullshit about having a bad earpiece so he couldn't hear Jack Tapper? Listen to the soundtrack: Trump very clearly repeats the name "David Duke" back to Tapper, so he knew what was being asked. The bad earpiece is just another lie.
