  • I was talking to some younger folks earlier and they did not know what Pearl Harbor Day was about. I couldn't believe it, soon we will have an entire generation who have never heard of WWII.

    • The results of out come based education, Whiskey. My parents tell of the rationing coupons, black outs and doing without basic food staples. Those of us who push to “enlighten” the current batch of students get nasty looks and under the breath comments.

      My youngest hates it when I have him sit and watch the military channel and explain to him just who and what a Nazi was. That word is tossed about with such ease and disregard for its true meaning.

    • I can't believe WW1 ended more than a hundred years ago now. When I was a kid, there were still WW1 vets all over the place. And WW2 was practically current events! And I even remember hearing a WW1 veteran speak at a Memorial Day parade sometime in the mid-80s, I think it was. I believe his introductory comment was, "If I'd known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself!"

  • My uncle was stationed at Pearl. When the attack happened, his ship The USS Lexington was taking aircraft to Midway, got the news and turned back.

    • My father was at Pearl Harbor but was transferred out the day before the attack. BTW, the 9/11 attacks killed more people and the main result of that is having to be butt grabbed every time we need to fly someplace.

    • I toured The Blue Ghost, the second carrier named Lexington in WWII, it is a museum in Corpus Christi. Many don't know the original Lady Lex was sank in the south Pacific and the replacement carrier was a different ship. The lore is that is how it got its nickname The Blue Ghost because many Japanese knew they had sank the Lexington so this ship had to be a ghost.

      • Yep, my uncle's was the Lexington CV-2. He finished off his service on a different ship, I'd have to ask my cousin Kerry if he knew which it was. I do know he wasn't on it when it was sunk.
