US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans: We’ve got a President that can send the Marshals after people skipping out on their student loans but can’t secure the border. The smart money is on this not being an accident but a calculated move to play well with populist rhetoric of the rich white guy from Vermont.

  • Yahoo has a clarification on this story. He wasn't arrested for student loans, he was arrested for refusing to comply with federal court orders, which is a criminal offense. He's been ignoring court summons and refusing to comply with court orders for almost ten years. Then, when a federal marshal showed up to arrest him (obviously a low priority case since, trust me, it doesn't take federal marshals that long to find someone), he retreated into his house and said he had a gun. At THAT point backup was called and it turned into a standoff with multiple well-armed LEOs in attendance.

        • I watched a "Yes, I have a gun" situation once. It was an eviction across the street from my house. An older lady sold her house and then refused to move. When the courts ordered her out and came to enforce the order, it was just one tired deputy from the court hoping to get it over with as quickly as possible. He asked her if she had a gun and she said yes. Then he asked if he could have the gun while the movers carried her shit out and she said, "It's locked in a closet for which I don't have a key." Whereupon he walked back to his car, picked up his radio, and all hell broke loose on my street. Never a good idea to be uncooperative and then tell LEOs there is a gun they can't have and can't see. They don't like that.

          • Barricading yourself in a house has always seemed stupid to me. You're not going to win and you'll be carried out one way or the other (body bag). The magic bullet stopping abilities of sheetrock only happens in the movies.

  • Seriously, This is the highest priority?
    It's not like these people are criminals, they aren't killing anyone or smuggling drugs. I think the US Marshal's Service could be going after more serious offenders.

  • If I didn't pay my mortgage the bank could have gotten the law to kick me out of my house so what is the difference? The law cannot repo an education but they can make sure the taxpayers are paid back for their generosity. 29 years on a $1500 loan? I would say the feds were very forgiving for not coming after this guy 25 years ago.

  • Does this mean debtors prisons again, by the time that cost is absorbed the debt will have doubled or tripled. Another bright idea from DC.

  • I guess a degree in advanced basket weaving isn't as lucrative as they thought it would be.

    • That is why the "free college" demands are so hilarious and frustrating. They assume the public should pay for degrees that have no productive benefit and to society. They don't care that this money would be better off with the tax payer that earned it or even (if it had to be confiscated by the state) feeding hungry people.

      And even if the money were going to create college grads with productive skills -increasing their numbers by millions, without a similar increase in a demand for labor, would result in little more than a collapse in wages and then they would be telling us that we have to start paying for their graduate degrees as well.

      • The real kicker is the decline in STEM degrees. It's too hard to get an education in engineering or science, and most schools are pushing fluff studies because the phony professors are raking in the dough.
