I left the machine shop when I joined the operating engineer's apprentice program. Worked out of Local 12 for over thirty years without ever walking out for a strike. Never voted for a strike either.
Another thing I never did in those thirty plus years was to vote for the candidate they told me to vote for. And I told them that. "I was an American before I joined this union, and I'll be an American after I retire. I vote what I feel is best for America, not the union." Had a few union officials rather unhappy with me.

It was windy, the base course was drying out quickly, so I had the water truck driver dump on it so I could get it mixed in and laid out. Another boss stopped me and asked what the hell was I doing. I told him exactly what "Joe" told me to do so if you have a problem go talk to him about it.

I'm not ashamed to ask for help if I run into a problem I can't figure out but do not hang over my shoulder watching my every move. I looked at a map after Trump was elected and the number of red counties amazed me. The majority of the state was red but they were in the vast rural parts of the state without the vote count.

United Airlines can't fill positions in our Tech Ops department at the SFO base. Last number I heard was around 87 positions. It's likely gone up since. Guys coming out of school won't even take them because you'd need to commute 2+ hours each way to afford housing to work in the city. Those that are already working there are making the 2 hour commutes. Their entire life and career is scheduled around their car pool departure.
Rats in a cage, living just to live and never getting anywhere. I live in New Mexico and yes it is a crappy place to live at times but at least I can breath clean air! Nobody has to commute 2 hours through heavy traffic to get to work. Even those who live 40 miles from Albuquerque can get to work in less than an hour unless there is a bad wreck on the freeway. Brother who lives in Portland and retired after 35 years at Intel rarely drove to work, it was faster to ride his bicycle and it was less than 3 miles. I look at the rat race that is New York or Los Angeles and think those people are nuts. Someone would have to pay me at least $250K per year before I would even think about it. Looking at housing prices in those two places they would have to double the wage paid. Maybe it's the old hillbilly in me but no amount of money, unless it was unbelievable, would entice me into living like a rat. I was born free, I'll die that way.

I don't know how you and other good folks have stood it all these years. You don't have enough voters in the state to over ride the liberal loons from San Diego all the way up the coast then over to Sacramento so the rest of the state gets screwed.
I looked at a map after Trump was elected and the number of red counties amazed me. The majority of the state was red but they were in the vast rural parts of the state without the vote count.
I can't think of a way that might help, you just have to keep fighting and bitching. Hoping one day someone will listen.
United Airlines can't fill positions in our Tech Ops department at the SFO base. Last number I heard was around 87 positions. It's likely gone up since. Guys coming out of school won't even take them because you'd need to commute 2+ hours each way to afford housing to work in the city. Those that are already working there are making the 2 hour commutes. Their entire life and career is scheduled around their car pool departure.
Rats in a cage, living just to live and never getting anywhere. I live in New Mexico and yes it is a crappy place to live at times but at least I can breath clean air! Nobody has to commute 2 hours through heavy traffic to get to work. Even those who live 40 miles from Albuquerque can get to work in less than an hour unless there is a bad wreck on the freeway. Brother who lives in Portland and retired after 35 years at Intel rarely drove to work, it was faster to ride his bicycle and it was less than 3 miles. I look at the rat race that is New York or Los Angeles and think those people are nuts. Someone would have to pay me at least $250K per year before I would even think about it. Looking at housing prices in those two places they would have to double the wage paid. Maybe it's the old hillbilly in me but no amount of money, unless it was unbelievable, would entice me into living like a rat. I was born free, I'll die that way.

Nope. I have the cheapest plan Dish offers, $28 per month, and ordered the MLB package because I love to watch baseball. I don't watch enough television to justify the cost of all the other nonsense.
