Have a terrific 4th of July and unlike the liberals, we know our readers know why we celebrate it.

  • Two days late but I found this very interesting:

Long before colonial politicians declared the nation's independence, men like Levi Preston had already made it a reality. On April 19, 1775, an 18-year-old Preston joined hundreds of his neighbors standing up to the British in what became known as the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Seven decades later, historian Mellen Chamberlain tracked down Preston to find out what led him to fight on that day. The historian assumed it might have been the Stamp Act or Tea Tax, but Preston said he never saw a stamp or drank any tea. "The boys threw it all overboard." Trying a different approach, Chamberlain asked about the writing of "Harrington, Sydney, and Locke about the eternal principles of Liberty." Preston must have thought the young man daft: "I never heard of those men." He added, "The only books we had were the Bible, the catechism, Watt's Psalms and Hymns, and the almanac." At this point in the discussion, the young historian must have been a bit frustrated. So, he again asked why did a teenaged Levi Preston choose to fight? "Young man," Preston replied, "what we meant in going for those Redcoats was this: we always had been free and we meant to be free always! They didn't mean that we should."

  • I had a great day. 18 holes with five other guys in the morning and I played reasonably well, plus one of the guys left the top down on his convertible and since I left before him I could deposit my half-empty MacDonald's coffee cup and half-empty orange juice cup and the bag from the Egg MacMuffin in his car, which was even more fun than the golf. Laughed all the way home. Then a big gathering of family and friends at my younger daughter's new house for an evening BBQ and our own private fireworks show. I tried to count all the people: approximately 35 people, 4 of them babies, 4 more under 5. This is my family, my descendants for the most part. My line is reproducing, thank you for the blessing, God. As I looked around at all the great people, my children and grandchildren, I thought about all that my daughters' mother has missed--she basically drank herself to death before any of this blessing was realized. So sad.

    • They let you play in a group of six, or broke you up into 2 threesomes?
You're very lucky to have children, that they grew up so well, and to have grandchildren. I was not so lucky, I have no children of my own, and it doesn't look good for the stepsons giving me any grands.
Your ex will never know what she has missed out on. You are truly blessed to be able to enjoy it.

We had a nice 4th, finally we decided not to host a party, first time in 20 years that we didn't have a yard full of drunks, leaving a mess for us to clean up later. We were invited to a BBQ at a friend's and we left no mess behind. The neighbors kept it up with the fireworks until past 1 am. The dogs seem to have become accustomed to it, and were able to sleep well.

Yesterday we had to attend a funeral at Bushnell National Cemetery. Kind of a sad end to the holiday, but a reminder of what it really represents.

      • Yeah, some dumb girl told us on the phone we could golf together but of course the guys in the pro shop said no way when we got there. So we played as two threesomes. Personally I don't like more than four guys in a group. Watching that many guys on the tee waggling and prepping drives me crazy

  • Happy Independence Day, IHTM. The people around here will have my dog going batsh!t setting off fireworks for awhile but that's freedom.

I just tell him to STFU and have another hunk of grilled pork chop.

  • I been celebrating the way our Fore Fathers would've wanted me to, drinking beer and driving the neighbors dog crazy with fireworks, I love this country.
