  • 9mm's are popular with people at the ranges, just the other day we had a guy in the range with a radar unit for bullets, it measured a 9mm round at 1340 feet per second, a 45 at 840 feet per second, the difference is in the power at impact, the 45 had a much higher punch at the target than the 9...The fly fast but use all their energy on the trip and not so much against the target..40 cal, 45, Sig 357 all had much more stopping power...These guys might as well be firing a 380. Plus some types of ammo expand as they travel. (Hollow point) instead of at the target...There are some nasty rounds that (Black Talon) expand on the way and make a huge hole going in and coming out. It all depends on the ammo, remember that law enforcement agencies use "low Bid" ammo. Gotta love the competitive bidding process. I use to tell my rookies, look, your driving a low bid car on low bid tires and shooting a low bid gun with low bid ammo, let's not get crazy..

  • I admit to not being an expert on ammo and such, but is it possible these hollow points managed to expand as intended against the jacket so that by the time they're gone through the fabric they'd lost too much moxie to keep going? Or is that basically what the article is saying to begin with?

  • Not a fan of the 9mm, or the NYPD, but my guess would be defective ammo.
    Maybe it was old? How often do they go to the range? Was it the same ammo they were given when they graduated the academy?
