Chinese users claim iPhone X face recognition can’t tell them apart

• It always amuses me when AI can't do the simplest things, things that a six-month-old baby can do, like recognize faces. And even when AI does manage to do a credible job of recognizing faces, all it takes is a wad of gum in the cheek or some eye-black to completely fool it. Last week I read about an AI team that wanted their robot to pile up some blocks like a toddler was doing. All the robot had to do was copy the toddler. But the robot was too stupid to understand it had to start with the bottom blocks first. It tried to start with the top blocks and they kept falling.

  It seems to me what's missing in all these AI attempts is understanding. A baby doesn't learn to recognize faces by brute force filing away all the individual visual characteristics of each face it sees. The baby first understands what a face is--"Hey, that's my Mom!"--and then once it understands what a face is it can use that understanding to comprehend how that face might change yet still belong to the same person.

  In other words, the robot builder is not God. The robot builder cannot create a human being with understanding.

  • When I was driving trucks, I was always amazed at the ability of REALLY young babies in their rearward facing car seats to look up into the cab of a semitruck, recognize a face smiling at them, make eye contact, and smile back.

    • I know! It's magical. And think about how we can see a high school classmate looking completely different than he did decades ago in high school and still say to ourselves, "Wait, I know this guy..."
