Someone in China created thousands of fake social media accounts designed to appear to be from Americans and used them to spread polarizing political content in an apparent effort to divide the U.S. ahead of next year’s elections, Meta said Thursday.

The network of nearly 4,800 fake accounts was attempting to build an audience when it was identified and eliminated by the tech company, which owns Facebook and Instagram. The accounts sported fake photos, names and locations as a way to appear like everyday American Facebook users weighing in on political issues.

A COVID lab run by a shady Chinese company was operating in Reedley, CA in the Central San Joaquin Valley, the Globe first reported July 28, 2023. We wanted to know why. The lab, which was supposed to be an empty building, was discovered by Reedley city code enforcement officers when they saw a garden hose attached to the building and investigated.

Officials found potentially infectious agents and both bacterial and viral agents in the lab, including, chlamydia, E. Coli, streptococcus pneumonia, hepatitis B and C, herpes 1 and 5 and rubella. The CDC also found samples of malaria.

The Globe posed several questions:

Why was a Chinese company making COVID-19 tests in California?

Where were these tests to be used? California public health agencies? Medical groups and hospitals?

Is the California Department of Public Health involved?

Who authorized this lab?

What does the Newsom administration know about this?

Are there other Chinese labs in California or the rest of the country?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sought to assign “risk scores” to social media users as part of an initiative dubbed “Night Fury,” documents obtained in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request show.

Night Fury sought to develop a methodology for combing through social media posts and content to identify potential criminal or terrorist activity.

According to a complaint made to the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), the data collected under the program included social media posts, photos, and videos.

The OIG ruled that sufficient safeguards had not been put in place on the program to respect the privacy of American citizens.

According to the Telegraph, leaked documents filed with the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), show an international team of scientists were planning to grow a new virus by combining the genetic material of various other strains.

The documents appear to show scientists had planned to take the genetic sequences of known coronavirus strains to combine them into a new generation of virus.

The proposal reads: “We will compile sequence/RNAseq data from a panel of closely related strains and compare full-length genomes, scanning for unique SNPs representing sequencing errors.
