Cruise ship tossed in hurricane-force storm turning around, officials say. You have to wonder if the Captain had too many jiggers of rum before deciding to sail into a hurricane? WTF?

This would be fun for me. I don't get seasick, carsick, airsick or any other kind of motion sick. We got a free cruise my wife won where she used to work years ago. "Free" meant about a $1,500 bar tab when we left the ship.
I am a sailor and own a big sailboat. And I get sick. It\'s a shameful thing for me but I am somewhat mollified by the fact that the greatest sailor who ever lived, Admiral Nelson, was worse than me. He couldn\'t step foot on a boat without getting seasick and the sickness never left him the whole time he was afloat, whereas with most people you eventually acclimate yourself to the motion.
On a positive note, I took a two-day cruising class in Wisconsin once in very rough weather (I went to Wisconsin because the west side of Lake Michigan is generally NOT rough but the wind switched directions for two days... naturally) and the instructor said he was very impressed by the way I could keep functioning even when I was green and puking. I\'d have my head over the side puking into the lake and he would say, \"Okay, it\'s your turn to try this, do you want your turn?\" And I would say, \"Of course I want my turn!\" and perform flawlessly. And then go back to puking over the side while the next guy took his turn.
Ah...o-k so in front of him there is a hurricane and he said... sure why not? then got in it and said... oops? Where did he get his license?

California DMV.
Glad to see you. I was getting ready to text you and see how you were. Haven't seen you for a couple of days.
I left last Wednesday for a Renaissance Faire in Yuma, AZ, and didn't get back 'til last night. I don't do computer much when I'm on a trip, too much fun stuff going on!
I knew you were on a trip, but not seeing you made me wonder if everything was OK.
This tells us which cruise line to stay away from. Any captain who would deliberately set sail into a storm like that is a fool, especially on a passenger ship. I wouldn't trust that mans judgement enough to row a dingy across the lake.
This really isn't that big of a deal. I've been on plenty of boats when the wind got to hurricane strength. The story seems to want us to believe they sailed into a hurricane, which isn't the case.
Theres an area between Cancun and Cuba that never fails to impress. Every time we've sailed through there, the ship gets tossed around like cork, no storm, just a really rough patch of water. Ive never seen panels and things fall off the ship, but I've seen plenty of crap sliding all over the place! Several times it was so bad that the crew was hanging barf bags all over the rails and in the elevators. I've never fallen, but i've seen more than my share of people fall on their butts trying to navigate the hallways!
Maybe it wasn't an official hurricane but driving a cruise ship into a storm just so you can remain on schedule is still stupid. The main rule for all cruisers, from one-man sailboats to giant cruise ships, is to look at the weather report and try to avoid the bad stuff.
Okay, wait, maybe that's the second rule. The first rule is avoid areas frequented by pirates... which is way more areas than the average American realizes.

Kinda strange in the age of satellite imaging, they decided to chance a Northeaster. Me thinks there's going to be a change of command ceremony here soon.
Very unusual decision by the cruise ship to head into a storm. Those big top-heavy monstrosities are not designed for stormy weather. They're designed to drive around the story weather and avoid it at all costs.
I guess they didn't learn anything from the saga of the Titanic.
One reason I have never been on a cruise.
Never? Geez Pop, you live right by the ports. You're missing out on a cheap and relatively hassle free vacation. Watch the specials and you can easily get a 7 day trip for under 300 bucks a person.
For real... cruising is what to do when you need to get away, don't have enough time to get away and you don't want to deal with anything too complex nor plan anything.
I get seasick.
Should have served sushi with the free drinks...,
"Many passengers said they were stuck in their rooms for several hours after the captain urged them not to go anywhere until the seas were calmer. They said officials gave travelers free access to their minibars."...Yea getting drunk in rough seas will be a big help...Now you got sick people who are drinking....Brilliant idea...
