There’s pretty convincing evidence that Avatar is a blatant rip-off a British graphic novel called Firekind. And equally convincing evidence that its a blatant rip-off of Dances With Wolves.
And now comes a really interesting mashup that makes it look like James Cameron may have borrowed heavily from Disney’s Pocahontas, too.
Call it “Pocahantas in Space.” Unless, of course, you want to call it “Dances With Wolves in Space” or “Firekind in Space.”

I didn't go see it. I wasn't going to spend my money and time in this way. There are very FEW things that are TRULY original even District 9 had to stand on the shoulders of sci-fi pics of the past, ALTHOUGH on originality District 9 takes up the award at least for the past two or three years. Had Avatar been out 5 -10 years ago perhaps it would have been better in my eyes. J. Cameron gets a zero in my book I want nothing to do with him.
It is tough to think of a movie released over the last forty years that Avatar did not rip off in some fashion or another . . . maybe Shaft Goes to Africa, which is a shame because Richard Roundtree kicking some of those pompous blue guys butts would have been just about the only thing that could have redeemed that awful piece of flaming dog doo of a movie.
Perhaps its just generic MOVIE. You know like the remakes of the remakes of the remakes that they churn out? Maybe I have just lived long enough to see all the stuff keep coming around the carousel again with a new hat, a new pair of pants, a new sequin, a twist on this, a twist on that. You know formula art.

I want those three hours of my life back! What a pantload. I agree with Ranger Dad, Avatar is a rip off of "Fern Gully".

"this is awesome"
but then with every minute passing by that it sat on me...i started to realize what it really was

Yeah, the similarities with Pocahontas occured to me the morning after I saw Avatar. Then then next week I saw this synopsis that pretty much cemented it: http://web.me.com/pascalboogaert/Site/foto3.html I'm just glad I hadn't seen it before seeing the movie. The preachiness was just bearable as it was, but I was able to ignore it enough to enjoy the technical aspects. Knowing about this ahead of time would have made me want my $13 dollars back.
I believe my son summed up Avatar best: "Fern Gully" for grownups.
