Joel Osteen shuts megachurch amid flooding crisis

Joel Osteen shuts megachurch amid flooding crisis. We hope no one gives money to this dipstick. His excuse is they’ll take people in when the shelters fill up. Yeah right.

  • Joel's only devotion is what is good for Joel. He is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Hypocrite with a capital H!

    • Yeah, when the shit hit the fan and the public started shaming him, he opened up the church. But he still can't get his story straight. First he says they couldn't because it was dangerous and they didn't have the staff, then he says they didn't open it because the city didn't ASK them to. WTF? Which is it, Joel? And why did you need to be asked? You couldn't look out the window and see help was needed? Lots of other people around the city with space didn't wait to be asked, they just opened up their places and offered to help, including a guy with a couple mattress stores who's letting people sit and sleep on the furniture he had for sale.

  • Just visited the church's Facebook page. Top message is from Joel praising the area's first responders, praying for the people of Houston... and asking for donations to help with the relief effort. The response is pretty negative.

      • Well, yeah, they were telling people to send money to the church so they could help people in Houston hurt by the flood. Like we would ever be able to ascertain where that money went once it was in the church's bank account.

  • He ought to let his members vote on whether or not they would care to exercise some Christian charity.

  • I kinda see where he's coming from. Remember what happened to the Superdome? Carnival lent the Ecstasy out during Katrina; once things were said and done, the ship had to get a complete refit. BUT... that shouldn't matter. Ministry is for the people and to serve them and God, not to preserve his church(the material, physical building).

Olsteen is a sham. He's one of the reasons Christians get a bad rap in this country. He does preach a good message and his books are inspiring; time to practice what you preach dude.

    • I see what you are saying, but also like you said, it don't matter... you trust G-D to help you rebuild if necessary.

      • Right. What would Jesus do? Would He say, "We don't want the riffraff messing up our beautiful building?"

        • Keep something in mind, the building he is in used to be The Summit. That was the name of an arena that was the former home of the NBA's Houston Rockets. It's a big ass building. Not sure as to why he is not using it for relief efforts, so I will wait before I form an opinion.

          • Saw video on TV this morning of flooding in the building in the lower levels where the utilities are, electric etc. That is an issue and I understand not opening it up immediately.

    • His books might be inspiring, I don't know, but they're not Christian. Remember this is the guy who wrote the book "Become A Better You" and never used the words "God" or "Jesus" once. That's flabbergasting for a so-called Christian preacher. Joel Osteen's ministry takes in something like eighty million dollars a year and employs a chunk of the Osteen family as ministers with big salaries--it's a giant cash cow for the Osteen family.

I've heard the phrase "for Joel, God is like a cosmic vending machine." Exactly. Basically, acording to Joel Osteen, if you believe in God and are obedient to Him, God will give you big dreams, self esteem, favor, health, and wealth. What's the harm in that? Well, imagine you are a parishioner scrapping together your pennies and dimes to give money to Joel Osteen's church and you DON'T get prosperity. What are you to think except that you are failing God? Why else would God not be making you wealthy? What you end up with is disillusioned parishioners who give up on the church because they never really got a true Christian message.

  • Ah yes, the prosperity gospel preacher. (Prosperity for Joel mostly.) Send us money and God will give you prosperity. Just trust us, that's what the Bible is all about.

  • His Father, good man, worked very hard to leave a great legacy for this asshole. He and his wife... destroyed it. The idiots that give him money... no respect for you.
