  • Well, looks like Irma pooped out before doing the kind of damage the media has been prognosticating for the last week. You can almost sense the disappointment amongst the media. They'll have to hone in on the places that got hurt, show the families of the people who died, and religiously avoid the stories about looters who took advantage of the evacuation because THAT story isn't politically correct. In other words, back to business as usual.

  • Man oh man, I suggest anybody living in west Florida start reading John D. MacDonald's Condominium right the f-ing now. He describes a hurricane that looks exactly like Irma that travels up the west coast of Florida scrubbing it clean "like a Brillo pad." It's a novel but he has either a foreword or an afterword that explains how his scenario is based on actual science. Thing is, all those barrier islands out there? In geologic terms those are all temporary islands--basically sand bars thrown up by the last giant hurricane--and they only last until the next giant hurricane which wipes them out completely and leaves brand new sand bars. (My brother and sister both have condos out on Pine Island off Fort Myers.)

    • MacDonald was a great story teller, and "Condominium" is one of his best. My sister lived just outside of Ft Myers for 7 years. Never had to use their steel shutters. In April they sold their house and moved to Avon Park. Now all they have is a 5x8 "safe room" in the new house. The hurricane is giving me a break by going west. We'll get a 6 hour thunderstorm outside of Charlotte - not the Hugo ll that I was afraid of.

  • We're still here. No storm stuff yet. I finished boarding up the windows and battening down the hatches.
    We're going to stay as long as we don't lose power, which has never been a problem for us, because the lines are underground here.

  • I still haven't decided if we're going to bug out of here or not. It makes no sense from what I see now, because there is really nowhere to go that gives us any better chance of avoiding problems. Even the most recent info on the Weather Channel show it staying to the East of us, which is the best case scenario for us. It looks like the winds will be gusting to 75+ mph when it gets here, and we're looking to avoid the most rain and storm surge. My prep has us in a position where we can stay put as long as we don't flood, which at this point seems unlikely. We have months of water and weeks of food, plus enough propane to cook for a couple of weeks. I also have enough attitude to dissuade looters for years! LOL

  • It'll make a turn to the northeast eventually once it's over land and hits the jet stream, probably as a tropical depression.

    • Rats escaping a ship.... although their hides are fabulous though... all I see are purses walking and shoes... fabulous shoes...

  • Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and ignore the liberal idiots who blame Trump for this...

    • Liberals are horrible people... they want Trump's homes and businesses to go away... not realizing that thousands of people are directly or indirectly employed and their local homes are going to be affected far more adversely. These people are sick.
