The First Count of Fentanyl Deaths in 2016: Up 540% in Three Years

The First Count of Fentanyl Deaths in 2016: Up 540% in Three Years. That’s approximately 64,000 DOA from drug overdoses last year, as compared to approximately 33,000 gun deaths per year, of which about 60% are suicides leaving roughly 13,200 non-suicide gun deaths. You’d think with figures like this Bloomberg and his anti-gun minions at Everytown for Gun Safety, the Brady Campaign, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Gabby Gifford’s Americans for Responsible Solutions, et al, would refocus on the larger threat. But they don’t want to do that because they hate guns and evidently don’t care one whit about drug overdose deaths.

  • Yes, doctors should prescribe the good stuff for real pain sufferers, but the idiots who take the illegal stuff and die? Looks like Darwin at work to me. Regard this situation as the cleaning of the genetic pool.

  • Fentanyl... I love that stuff! If I could buy it off the shelf, I probably would! It was given to me pre-op for three of my surgeries. I actually asked the anesthesiologist to administer it as slowly as possible before my second surgery! He kind of grinned at me, said "sure thing bud' and knocked me out even faster than normal...dick!

  • My concern is that all this focus on opioid pain medication is going to cause doctors to under-prescribe the stuff for people who really need and benefit from it. I'm sure doctors don't want the FDA crawling up their ass because they prescribe "too much" of it.

    • There seems to be a serious issue with someone complaining that the VA prescribes too many opioids. That is a problem for me, since not only do I get opioids for pain from the VA, but also that there are many returning vets that need them to manage their pain from battle injuries. As it is, active duty personnel are not only UNDER prescribed pain meds, but it seems the doctors think Tylenol is a cure all for pain, and that shit doesn't even work for my headaches.

      • I believe the focus on prescribing opiates has tightened supply to such an extent that people are just using heroin instead. Not the people that actually need pain relief, but the ones that were buying it on the street to get high.
As it stands now, you literally need to have a bone sticking out of your skin to get prescribed an opiate these days. Doctors are so hamstrung with the new regs that they are prescribing tylenol three for ten days and referring folks to pain management docs.

        • Yea, and Tylenol 3 (Vicodin), and Percoset don't work on me. When I had my neck surgery, I called the Dr's office and told them that post-op pain meds need to be something else. They never told the doc, and he gave me Vicodin. I went 24 hours after surgery with only my Tramadol for pain. Then he gave me Dilaudid. I called the pharmacy to find out if they carried it, and they wouldn't tell me, they said I had to come in with a scrip and they would let me know if they could fill it.
This shit is getting out of hand.

          • I used to have Kaiser. Seemed no matter WTF was wrong with you they'd prescribe Motrin. I used to joke with the doctors they they must have stock in Motrin.
