  • The problem here is not that the bridge was designed by women. A woman can follow proper engineering procedures just as well as a man, given an equal education.

    The problem is that the General Contractor was most likely chosen not because they are really good at this, but because they are Cuban owned, and use engineering teams that are put together for the purpose of showcasing women in engineering, rather than for their expertise.

    I've worked alongside women operating equipment, and in the engineering field, that did their job just fine. But they weren't chosen for their job because of their plumbing, but because they could do the job. As soon as PC takes a front seat ahead of engineering ability, things will fail. I'm sure this will be shown as the investigation progresses, but I'm also sure that the mainstream media won't talk about it.

    • You remember them old Euclid scrapers? Cable operated, four wheel tractors with a 5 speed manual transmission? No ROPS, just a windshield and a spring seat?

      I was running a road job on the Navajo reservation one time and the boss was on my ass to get another scraper operator hired, we needed to move more dirt. This Navaho woman came to the office, said she could run a scraper so I hired her just as a joke. The joke was on me! That woman had to weigh 400 pounds, both cheeks hung over that old spring seat, and she could run the hell out of that old machine! She never two blocked it and popped a cable, never spun a tire when loading up, she put the men I had working there to shame! Best damn scraper operator I had ever seen! Funny thing was when the boss showed up a few days later he got on my azz, who is that big fat woman on my scraper? I told him, boss you better go watch her for a while, she is the best I have ever seen. He did and damned if he didn't give her a raise! But when the job was done, so was she. She didn't want to go with us to the next job because it was on the other side of the state. Damn shame, the woman was a damn good hand.

    • What you said. And it goes for all kinds of diversity bullshit. I'll go a step further: the sort of women who are competent civil engineers probably don't even apply for diversity contracts because they're too busy doing good engineering and already have plenty of work because of their reputation for competence.

      • That is something I have never understood. I worked with a lot of very competent women over the years and they didn't need "recognition" just because they were women. Just understanding that they had done a good job. And we butted heads lots of times too, plans are one thing but getting a shovel in the ground and doing the work is another. But most of those gals were smart as can be and when we showed them what we were working with, the design changes that needed to be made, no problem. Lets get the road built and move on.
