They need to just skip all the Democrats in the line of succession and find a Republican for the governor’s office, or just quit. Maybe Virginia should just merge into neighboring states and forget about the whole thing.

ehh they don't have to do that. Seriously, that would only be an issue if they all resigned at once. If they have the sense God gave slugs (which IS questionable when Dem-Effs are involved), they'll resign sequentially, bottom to top, making sure a reliable party hack is securely in place before the next up goes --- thus making sure at least one of their own is in the chain of succession at all times.
