Burning our food while people starve...
The discouraging part of this story is that it shows a complete lack of will when it comes to fiscal reform; borrowing money to pay operating expenses can't work for very long, as most people realize when they think about it, but few politicians are willing to subordinate their short term electoral interests to the long term needs of the entire society.
Remember when Ted Cruz went to those same Iowa caucuses and made a principled statement against ethanol subsidies? Democracy is broken because the electorate is too stupid. The people who get elected are the people willing to say whatever the audience in front of them wants to hear, not the people with principles. And the audience buys into it because they're stupid. How many people actually benefit from those ethanol subsidies? Very few, and most of them are out of state corporations.
That is precisely why they are called "politicians". They will do anything to get re-elected.
