13 armed men swarm animal shelter in Wisconsin to kill Bambi. No, government isn’t out of control in this country. 13 men with guns drawn is a delicate response to an illegal baby deer. In a tyrannical country they would have sent 14 guys. So relax.

  • I can TOTALLY understand that there is another side of the story and perhaps the truth lies in the middle on this one, but the truth of the matter that 13 people to find ONE DEER regardless of there being 10 buildings and they were armed (either in or out of holsters) it is just ridiculous. I mean seriously come on... Two to deal with the people and two to deal with the deer would have been MORE than necessary if indeed they have had problems with the animal shelter before and they needed to make sure that the animal was taken off site. With two people the job could have been done. I agree that they should have just let the animal stay where it was originally (whoever brought the animal to the shelter) or the shelter should have had the animal go back to the wild or put it in a reserve and be done. Is it better to kill the baby deer because of a potential wasting disease in the area? I mean do we kill children because of a potential wasting disease in an area? Okay it is an animal but I think that is kind of crazy.

  • So "policy" overrules any attempt at a common sense solution that would allow the animal to live? That's the problem with Big Government and it's cold, impersonal rules. With the mentality of too many in the government today, I'm wondering if they were worried about running into their idea of religious extremists at the "Society of St.Francis".

    • Niemeyer said due to the deer being held in an area known to have chronic wasting disease, the animal could not be released.

      CWD is mostly found on the south side of the state and may be transmitted both directly through animal-to-animal contact and indirectly from a disease-prion contaminated environment, according to the DNR. Studies indicate CWD prions exist in the saliva, urine and feces of infected deer and can shed from an infected individual, bind to the soil and can persist there for long periods of time.

      “If a deer is held in captivity, we can’t release it into the wild or another environment, because it could have the disease,” Niemeyer said. “Additionally, in this case, the deer was not an adult, so we couldn’t test it for the disease.”

      • They're using CWD as an excuse. It has nothing to do with this situation. The deer wasn't from the area, wasn't going to be released, and since there's thousands of deer already running around in the area it simply makes no sense.

  • I'm thinking the department in charge of killing this fawn has probably had previous encounters with this shelter, "no kill" shelter being key here. Effective wildlife game management might appear harsh to most people, but the basic rule of only the strongest survive is essential to proper management. The fawn should not have been rescued in the first place. The mothers leave their fawns in cover and go out to forage. They do this until the fawn is big and strong enough to hang with mom and run away from danger if needed. Since the people who brought the fawn in were able to catch it, tells me it was still in this stage of it's life. Shame on them for taking the fawn away from it's natural habitat, mother and herd.
    Back to the SWAT response to take the animal. I'm guessing if only one person had come to take the animal, he would have been met by zealous PETA volunteers that would have held him up long enough to run the animal out the back. Possibly even assaulted by the shelter staff. Like I said before, they probably had dealings with this shelter before. Every quote from the shelter seems a bit over the top, "armed to the teeth, it was like a SWAT team and she was in a body bag." It's possible that the last time officials dealt with the shelter, it wound up taking 10+ officers to get the place under control.
    Just something to think about.

      Do you think that the agents called PETA to tell them that "btw we have 13 men coming, so don't try anything"?

      Besides, PETA is not really interested in animal rights. The ones who are sane enough to have any idea of what they are interested in, are solely concerned with the promotion of statism. Animal rights is a vehicle for that goal. If that goal is not coming into play, the animals can go to hell.

    • I think you're doing an awful lot of reading between the lines. Here's what we know: 13 men showed up with guns drawn to kill a baby deer. Even if every single one of your conjectures is 100% true, this was overkill. It was a baby deer, not Al Queda or Machine Gun Kelly.

      • I missed the guns drawn part in the article. Armed to the teeth is what I read. Is it possible that each officer was wearing his/her required sidearm? I dunno, I see a spastic animal rights volunteer who is pissed off that they took an animal away. They plan to sue the agency. On what grounds? The state took an animal that was being kept illegally and euthanized it. Sucks for the fawn, but it certainly would not likely survive in the wild on it's own after being taken care of by humans. I see a leftwing group of animal rights whackos that managed to get a dumbass leftwing reporter to do a smear article on some guys doing their job. How big is this place? The article says they were serving a search warrant. Maybe they had a need for that many guys.

        • Well, "armed to the teeth" might be hyperbole, but to me it suggests that sidearms were not in their holsters. Unless they wear their holsters in their mouth. As for the fawn not surviving in the wild, it didn't need to survive in the wild because it was headed to a wildlife refuge.

          Your followup link sounds like typical bureaucratese to me. Government numbnuts trying to make themselves look less stupid by spinning everything as much as they can. It wasn't a body bag, the fawn was wrapped in a towel - what the hell's the difference? It wasn't dead yet, it was killed offsite - what the hell's the difference? Dead is dead! And they needed 13 guys with guns because there were 10 buildings? Really? That's their excuse? I'll bet anyone a million dollars I can search 10 buildings in less man hours than it takes for 13 government employees to assemble and drive there and back. It's ridiculous. It's absurd. If you give me a choice between the kind of people who are unwilling to let an abandoned baby deer starve to death and the kind of people who will raid an animal shelter so they can kill a baby deer, there's no doubt which I will choose.

          And something doesn't ring true about the CWD excuse. They say the area is full of the disease but the fawn wasn't even from the area, and you can't tell me there aren't thousands of deer in the very area they're claiming it's too dangerous to have a deer living. The fawn will spread disease but the thousands of wild deer won't? I call bullshit.

          • Oh, no doubt it was probably overkill on the part of DNR sending that many people. Still the guys are game wardens and every one I ever met wore a sidearm. If they came in with guns drawn, the shelter people would have been clear in pointing that out. They would all be quivering and whining about how they feared for their lives instead of saying they were armed to the teeth.
            I agree the official statement contains a considerable amount of CWA to justify an expenditure of manpower and resources to get one deer! But I can guarantee if you had been sent to get the deer by yourself, you would have failed. They'd have played "where's Giggles" with you and shuttled the animal from barn to barn until you left , frustrated. I'm certain that already happened, hence the search warrant and additional manpower to serve said warrant. I'll address the abandoned fawn thing again. They leave them in the brush to forage and return to them to provide milk. At this stage you can walk right up to them and pick them up. They'll giggle (cry out of fear) just like the shelter people said this animal did, hence it's naming. But they will not offer resistance. I know this because I have a resident herd of about 40 on my property. I watch the rut, gestation, birth cycle every year. My girls name the deer and we watch them live, grow up and die. One of fawns this year is losing an eye. Right now it looks like a brown husk, similar to the material a hornet nest is made of. If I call TPWD or the Sheriff, they will come and euthanize the animal. The rescue people all know to leave it alone and would not come out if I were to call. So we leave it alone. If the animal survives, it will likely be a liability to the herd and will eventually be culled by the natural selection process. Or it could survive and become one of the dominant does in the herd. You never know, but you simply don't interfere with the process.

          • Okay, so we don't know about the guns, and maybe the people who picked up the fawn in the woods were wrong to do so but we don't know. Most people who live in rural areas understand deer fairly well and the fact is, once in a while Mother Nature gives you a choice: let the wild critter suffering in your backyard starve or try to do something. That's probably how mankind ended up with dogs and horses. All that aside, once they did something by bringing it to the animal shelter, you can't blame the animal shelter for being humane enough to feed the poor thing and find it a permanent home. Here's what I think: I am sick and tired of everybody thinking bureaucrats have a magic answer for everything. They don't. Most of them are flat-butt numbnuts following a bureaucratic rule to the exclusion of any common sense that might get in their way. 13 guys to kill a baby deer because they MIGHT run into opposition is an example of how stupid they are. If there's opposition and the one guy you sent is too stupid to find a deer then you can send 13 guys tomorrow.

            Personally, I cannot imagine what sort of armed law enforcement officer would be incapable of handling a group of animal shelter whippersnappers all by himself. I know Marshall Dillon would be in and out in about ten minutes without ever saying an impolite word. (That's a real guy, right?)

          • Let's call this one a draw! I think we agree that there might be more to the story than originally posted. We agree the game wardens in Kenosha might be a tad wimpier than the ones elsewhere. I think the ones I've met here in Tejas could live by the Texas Ranger's Creed, "One riot, one Ranger." And I definitely agree that more bureaucracy never makes any situation better.

            The reason I questioned the story in the first place is that it looked real familiar. We had a similar situation at a "no kill, not for profit shelter shelter a mile from my house last year. People complained of abused animals instead of illegal harboring of wildlife. They were on about 5 acres and there were several barns, houses and trailers on the property. Took a court order and multi-departmental cooperation to get into and shut the place down. By all reports, it was a true horror show inside the buildings.

          • And those fawns that are truly abandoned? The dominant does will pick up the orphan and raise it. It will be second in heirarchy to their own baby, but they will raise it. I see it every year in my own yard. Lot's of deer killed by traffic around here.

            They were obviously trying to hide the deer, which makes their whole story shakey.

          • "What deer?" is not much of an attempt at hiding. Sounds like a stupid kid who was caught flat-footed and didn't want to narc on Bambi. But let's be real - nobody is going to hide a deer from a DNR guy. It's not like an extra ace you can hide up your sleeve or a needle in a haystack. It's a deer.

        • Why were they serving a search warrant? Usually takes some pretty good reasons to get a judge to sign one of them.

The fawn was then given an injection to relax, wrapped in a towel and placed in a kennel for transport, Niemeyer said. “At no time was the fawn in a body bag, and at no time was it thrown over anyone’s shoulder, like some people claimed,” she said. The fawn was alive when it was removed from the property, and it was euthanized off scene, Niemeyer said.

            Well, that sheds a whole different light on the subject.

          • Yup. the crew had hand fed this fawn for two weeks. Understandably, they got attached to it. Look at those pictures. These mother fuckers put a collar and walked this wild animal on a leash like a dog.

          • They shouldn't have had it that long. It should have gone to a wild animal habitat within 2 days.

  • I think border security wouldn't be an issue if we adopted these types of tactics in dealing with illegal ali--- err paperless progressives who migrate north. If that baby deer were a illegal Mexican it would have been offered a driver's license and a host of taxpayer funded handouts as well as directions to all voting places within a 200 mile radius.
