Augusta National Golf Club admits first two women. They’re both Republicans: Condoleeza Rice and Darla Moore, a former employee of the Republican National Committee and current partner in a Bain-like investment firm. Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi and Debbie Wasserman Schultz are at the end of a long waiting list rolled up and hanging on the wall in the men’s room.

This whole thing is meaningless. Augusta National is so exclusive that it's an elitist's club among the elitists. It about prestige, & very few people can play there. Hell, the memebers don't have much access to the course. Is it cool they now have females members? Yes, but does it really matter in the long term? No.
You're right. They have to have that damn course so perfect for the Masters that the membership is necessarily banned for months at a time. I'd rather have a one-time invitation to play with a member than actually be a member myself.
I don't know your financial situation, but I would bet you couldn't afford the mebership fees. THey are one elitist group for sure!
It's not the dues that are the problem. But when the club wants to make improvements to the course, like adding length to it for today's tour players or improving the clubhouse, that's were you really need the deep pockets. Augusta National, & other similar types courses do nothing half assed. They spare no expense, & if you can't keep up, you will not be a member.
Here's what I think is going to happen: eventually J.P.'s Moment of Common Sense will become so famous that Augusta will BEG me to join... no charge. Just because of who I am. (I have an active imagination.)
"A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?"
If you're gonna dream...dream big! :D
Not being a fan of golf, and knowing little to nothing of it's ranks, clubs and organizations, I will have to defer to the folks more knowledgeable on the subject than I.
(walks off muttering, "take a stick, whump a ball, CHASE the ball, take another stick, whump the ball.....repeat as necessary....and it's considered a sport?)

Well, if they HAD to allow females at least the 2 Conservative ladies might dissuade the Fonda, Schultz and Pelosi liberal type riff raff out.....One would hope anyway.
Hope they can figure out the urinals... Does that mean that they're going to have to put in Ladies tees?
I know Condoleeza actually golfs. I don't know about the other one. So at least for Ms. Rice the membership will be more than symbolic. It'll be interesting to see whether they put in ladies tees for her. If they don't, how can the feminists possibly complain about Augusta NOT discriminating on the basis of gender?
Yes.
I'm cool with it because Augusta National's board chose to do it now rather than being pressured to do it.
You thought this was voluntary?? Really?
Spineless, PC, girl-men! It was bound to happen. The stalwart managers of Augusta eventually get old and die off, leaving the operation to the man purse carrying ass-kissers. It may have actually been voluntary, but only in the sense that that the ones volunteering don't have an independent, all male, fully functioning brain.
I know, I know, I just pissed off 90% of the men and 100% of the women who read this. Seriously, are there not enough golf clubs that accept women as members? How soon before we have a sexual harassment suit against a lifetime member. Is there NOWHERE that men can go to get break from the constant estrogen rain may forever permeate our modern society.
I don't know. Is there anywhere women can go to get away from the stink of testosterone?
Infinitly more places than men can, as men are not so obviously insecure as women, Your stink of testosterone remark is evidence of that. We don't demand that you open all your private clubs to us, and yet your gender demands all the way to the Supreme Court access to our private bastions. When granted access do you feel welcomed or just the vindication of a spoiled brat?
My comment about estrogen was not intended as an insult against women so much as a comment on the feminization of ALL men through the progressive brainwashing of our young boys.
I do agree with your assessment of the feminists need to force their way into everything male, simply because they think they have a right. NO right can be attained by taking from another so that you benefit.
Now Now Willy! I was countering your remarks about estrogen. I deplore the feminization of men in America, but it is true that most of the country is STILL run by men, with their particular flaws. WOmen have had to live with that for years. I DO believe the feministas should shut the hell up an dquit making life miserable for the rest of us!
Your welcome for the apology. That is something I do take seriously and don't hand them out frivolously.
I respond to posts on these boards after reading what is no more than a short comment on a screen. W/O knowing the person posting how can I possibly know the intent. That said I reread both your and Floyd's posts and Floyd's most current post following this and I must say, they both sound quite serious to me, hence my tirade, I hope you understand that. After your acknowledgement of my apology and what you said I now know you a bit better and maybe would make a different judgement.
DRB on the other hand, after reading the last comment well you'll understand why I cannot possibly entertain giving that person the time of day. She is more interested in hurling cheap insults, I can take it as well as dish it out!
I usually try not to involve myself in others disputes here.
Having said that, when I first read your post I also thought you were out of line. However having had the situation explained to you, you were a big enough person to apologize.
For that I commend you. However, it has been my experience that drb does not " hurl cheap insults" as a general rule. She DOES, however, tend to support her friends, albeit if she thinks THEY are wrong will say so also.
Having read a few of your posts, I find myself respecting your opinion MOST OF THE TIME. Now I am sure MY opinion of YOUR opinion means little to you, as it should. Having said that, I also believe your assessment of drb is flawed. As you said, and please forgive my c&p here, " I now know you a bit better and maybe would make a different judgement."
I hope you will take the time to know drb a "bit better".
I am NOT criticizing nor trying to put you down, nor am I attempting to be "snarky", and If I come off that way, my sincerest apologies. I am not the wordsmith that others on here are please realize that this is about the longest post I have ever written here, and is longer than the E-mails I send to my family and friends, which should (I hope) tell you the respect I have for drb
I, personally, would like to see you around more often as new opinions and insights are welcome here. Even those we disagree with, as long as they are done in a respectful manner.
Thank you, Ooddballz. I appreciate that.
Sounds like a plan KW. ;)
Wow, and well you should! That is a fine compliment and obviously once again I have misjudged and hope you will understand. The last entry to your friend Rose, I tried and hope succeeded in explaining why I went off as I did. Now, however still another (oddballz) has mentioned that they thought I may be wrong here. Geez I hate that, but I appreciate it thank you OBZ. DRB, I do appreciate your defense of your friends, I wasn't intending my words to arrive in a way that would be perceived as condescension. I never like to speak to another that way. If it is all the same to you I would like to forget this thread and hope that you will allow me the opportunity to come to know you better in the threads to come.
Hold on, now bubbs. Just who are you calling insecure? Rose? Hardly. That testosterone remark from rose was nothing more than a snarky reply to pink Floyd's snarky estrogen comment. Snark for snark IS FAIR. No one here is making any such demands to be part of any club. Yes there are some leftist loons but they DO NOT speak for the entire female population and we are not responsible for them or their nonsense. I don't want access to your private retreats and I seriously doubt that rose would either. So you can take your condescension toward rose and shove it where the sun don't shine.
Right when I was about to apologize for being a little too touchy anymore ya gotta go and tell me to shove it. I suppose you misunderstood my temper tantrum so I will allow for that. I suppose Rose can speak for herself though. I am always hearing the male white populace being crapped on fairly regularly and I am quite loud in my defiant defense and stink of testosterone rather over addressed any slight I have seen on this thread so far.
Well, from my reading of your post, you deserved it. Yes rose can speak for herself, and she might not have been as "nice" as I was. Further if you feel you can speak in defense of the white male masses for crimes against them, then I can most certainly speak out in defense of my friend rose! Yes the white male populace does indeed get "crapped on" but again from the left. All I'm saying is to treat individuals individually. And again rose was mirroring pink; testosterone for estrogen. It's fine to defend yourself or others you identify with, but you should be fair in your assessment of the situation.
He said: Is there NOWHERE that men can go to get break from the constant estrogen rain may forever permeate our modern society.
And based on the context in which it was posted, we knew he was being snarky with it and rose replied with an equally snarky post.
How can you think of yourself as fair when you give his snark a pass but then jump on rose for hers? There's still time to apologize to rose anytime you feel like it. (and no, your above post doesn't pass for one)
I speak for myself here, not the masses. Well not this time anyway. I was not trying to be fair, as I was speaking in support of a statement you call "snarky". "Snarky" I am not familiar with, but I take it to mean sarcasm nor am I familiar with Floyd as you say you and Rose are, so I wouldn't know if he was being "snarky". If that is the case though, I did misunderstand and like I said maybe spoke in anger at something that was meant in jest . That said I am sorry if I offended, not my intention as I like coming here. My apology is for you Rose, for you DRB maybe you could lighten up just a bit yourself.
Thank you , rose. You are correct. I did feel that he responded in an inappropriate manner to your post. And with that last bit of condescension (this time toward me) it seems he can dish it out but can't take it. Still, I'm pleased that he chose to apologize to you. So, now I can go on about my merry way ;)
Snarky: A witty mannerism, personality, or behavior that is a combination of sarcasm and cynicism
Thanks for the apology. I was shocked at yoru response. But I feel that drb was reading you the riot act based on your posts and their inappropriateness, so now maybe you owe HER an apology as well. None of us here are psycho bitch feminist liberals, so we NEVER deserve to be treated that way.
convent
maybe a tupperware party?
Oh, good Lord, women don't get along anyway. Any ladies only thing will degenerate into a catty name calling free for all once the Chardonnay and gin and tonics start flowing.
/sarc off
Not sure there is much sarc there! Women as a rule do not bond together in the same way men do. THey compete with one another. Even when there is no competition going on!
rose...that's exactly how men bond together... :???:
Sometimes they go to the emergency room
But after the game, they go get a beer together. Women? Not so much.
Add me to the list of non-offended women. In fact, I'm a little cheesed off that they made this decision at all! I happen to like the fact that they chose to remain an all-male club. It's their prerogative. Every year I'd watch the Masters coverage and every year some broadcast palooka would lament of this 'situation'. Just the topic made me cringe.
I'm with Karmaa on this one. There was a reason why men's clubs (Brook's, White's, et al) flourished for upper class English society. It was the one place where a man could engage in useful conversation - or not - with like minded comrades and not be bothered by flighty, emotional, and dare I say managing females! The man of the house was surrounded by them at every turn.
So many women truly believe the "what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine" adage. I recall a lawsuit filed in Boston about 10 years ago by a man who sought access to what was known as a women's only health club. He stated that he was being discriminated against due to his gender. All of a sudden all the harpies who had kvetched about not being allowed to join the Algonquin Club or lunch at Locke-Ober's now decried this man's attempt to 'level the playing field'. I was amazed but not surprised at the two-facedness of these people.
Can't have it both ways.
"Can’t have it both ways."
And yet, that is what liberals want.
I spend lots of time with large groups of people who congregate to enjoy their time together. If a group of men wants to be a group of men, more power to them. Likewise for a group of women. Likewise for a group of old people, or smokers, or golfers, or gay people, or straight people, or white people, or black people. Any group of people that doesn't want me around, I wouldn't feel comfortable being around if I forced my way into the group. I can't see why liberals can't understand this simple concept.
That's right. They've got the mental illness known as Liberalism.
Well, there are the "gentlemans" clubs that only have the eye candy you won't mind having around. Then there are gay clubs, but I don't think that is up your alley or mine.
Sorry. You didn't offend ALL the women. I happen to agree with you.
The whole point of a club is to be a gathering spot for people with things in common. Gender is certainly a legitimate thing to have in common, as is race, religion, social standing, hobbies, etc. People feel more comfortable when they are around people that they perceive to be "like" them, which is why there are black churches with not a single white face in the congregation, women's book clubs, boy and girl scouts, gardening clubs, cigar-smokers clubs, etc. etc. etc.
As for golf in particular - the sport is segregated into PGA and LPGA - why shouldn't the clubs be, if that's what the members want?
I'm glad to see that there are other women who think like my wife. She's the one who made me aware of this. She was very angry that Augusta "gave up the fight". She was even more angry that it was so-called "conservative" women that had applied and accepted the first memberships.
They may not have applied. They may have been invited. If I was a member considering allowing women, I would say to myself, "That Rice woman would be interesting as hell to talk to over a Dram Buie, and that Moore woman probably has great investment advice."
It is my understanding that they were indeed invited. The woman that "applied" from IBM did NOT receive an invitation.
I'm thinking that you are probably correct in the suggestion that they were invited rather than applying for membership themselves. It just doesn't seem to fit Condi's persona as I percieve it anyway.
And Augusta is not really very handy for a professor at Stanford.
true
Five thumbs up to Pink Floyd, I love that avatar BTW. One of my favorite TV characters (B&W Floyd anyway). I am sick of the new generation of ?men? who just give it all away.
Thanks, I get quite a few comments on the avatar. I just thought it was funny and didn't expect the reaction I've received. There are so many fans of the Andy Griffith show that the characters are almost universally recognized.
I definitely got the slightest whiff of sarcasm there.
http://tinyurl.com/dygo36a (WARNING! CNN link!!!)
"Women's rights activist Martha Burk put the issue in the spotlight in 2003, when she led a protest against the club and worked to put pressure on corporate leaders to withdraw their support for the organization and the Masters.
On Monday, she declared victory.
"My first reaction was, we won -- and we did," Burk said. "By we, I mean the women's movement and women in the United States, particularly those in business."
She said continued pressure from women's groups and corporate interests forced the club's hand. Activists over the last decade "facilitated a couple of sex discrimination suits against corporations whose CEOs are (Augusta National) members," Burk said, but she did not name any corporations or individuals.
Burk also pointed to the April controversy over the club's failure to admit IBM CEO Virginia Rometty, as it has past IBM leaders. Sponsoring the Masters usually guarantees membership to a company's officers. But Rometty had been ineligible because she is female.
"We gave them a pretty big black eye in April when they dissed Ginny Rometty and did not allow her in the club as they had all of the males preceding her as CEOs of IBM. And I think they knew they could not sustain it," she said.
At the time, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama believed women should be admitted to the club."
I notice the IBM exec was STILL not admitted. Just saying.
I looked her up: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/biography/10069.wss
Her name is Virginia M. Rometty and her bio lists this tidbit: "Ms. Rometty is a leader in diversity initiatives including IBM’s Women in Technology Council and the Women's Leadership Council, and is one of the senior sponsors of the Women's Executive Council." Do we need to say more? Diversity this, diversity that, and call me "Ms." With that background I wouldn't invite her to join anything.
HATE. HATE. Hate people like that! "Diversity" is a code word on the left for racism, but the kind of racism that THEY like and approve of.
Sorry, JP, I missed.
They've admitted who they wanted to admit.
Barrack Obama was born on the floor of a third world woman's bathroom and raised by bacon eating muslim swine!
Blackmailing your way into a club sure should make a body feel welcome, 'eh
I agree that clubs are just that, and they have whomever they please join - it's not a right, people. But it seems to me that it's funny - the club finally bowed to the libtards pressure and then brought on board two of the most conservative women out there. Now what's the left gonna say about that?
We know what they're gonna say,..........but who cares?
Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi and Debbie Wasserman Schultz are at the end of a long waiting list rolled up and hanging on the wall in the men’s room.
That explains the huge toilet paper bill at Augusta. Everyone wants to use that sheet with those 2 names on it.
Make that the LAST sheet.
Oh that is not with some delightfully humorous overtones, is it?
Without^
I'm a little old fashioned where this subject is concerned, but why can't men have an exclusive men only club? I still see the woman coming fully unhinged when a man wants to join their club. just sayin...
Maybe I'm old fashioned too, but I think any club should be free to exclude anyone they want. It's a CLUB. It's not supported by taxpayer money.
To quote Groucho Marx: "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member".
Augusta could have remained a "female free zone." For whatever reason, their present membership extended these invitations to Condoleeza Rice and Darla Moore. I think the fact that they did it under their own time table, and not in response to anything NOW was doing makes it even more honoring to the 2 new female members. :-)
Apparently they have been considering these 2 for some time, but DID want to invite them on their time table, not as a result of pushes to add women to the club. I agree that men should have some men only clubs, and activities (like bowling night.) THe problem in clubs for golfing is a little different. More business gets done on the course than ever gets done in offices. So women being excluded limits their ability to work at an equivalent level as the guys, no matter how good they are, how smart, how hardworking. When wives predominately stayed home that wasn't an issue.
Yeah, well, I hate to divulge Man Secrets, but the whole "we get work done on the golf course" line is a load of hooey. It's an excuse we use to justify being at the golf course, plain and simple. It's what men tell their wives, while the other husbands try not to snicker. If somebody tried to get work done while I was golfing, I'd tell him to get his priorities in order.
True but the time spent either on the course or in the 19th hole is time that female colleagues or clients are excluded from in men-only environments. That is a disadvantage for those women. OTOH, if a club wishes to limit membership based on gender (or anything else), then let them. I think Augusta National did the right thing for its own purposes. A majority of its members must have agreed or the invitations would not have been extended.
I think walking into their bar and seeing Norman Schwartzkoff and Condoleezza Rice talking about what a douche Obama is would be pretty cool.
Uh huh, cuz golf comes first...or something.
Exactly. See? You're learning to empathize with men. This is progress. Pretty soon you'll be burping and farting out loud, and watching TV with your hand down your pants.
uh, no. I like being a wee bit girly every now and again...I think you fellas kinda like it when we ladies are, well...ladies. I simply understand that men are well...men...and they will do whatever it is that men do. and well, I ain't going to change 'em...don't really want to either for that matter. cuz I like men who are, well...men.
*shrugs shoulders and walks away mumbling, it is what it is, dang what's he expect from me anyway??*
I thought all women were striving to be like men. Sheesh, now I have to start all over trying to figure y'all out.
It better be a quick death. My first one took only seconds.
Actually, one does.
Make your point and then die before she tries to refute it.
There are two ways to win an argument with a woman. Neither of them works.
We are complicated creatures...that's all you need to know.
I agree Karmaa...there isn't a gentleman's club out there that I would want to be part of.
And any club that would have you must have standards so low you wouldn't want to join? Is that what you're saying?
That's what Groucho was saying, for sure!
Now where did I say anything of the sort, JP? I see it as my standards are too high to be any part of...THAT. (*walks off mumbling* I swear that JP and that Poppa, do they even know boundaries?!?)
HEY!! What did I do?
OK, you must have read my mind.
I was thinking about how much we would like to see you in a gentlemans club. ;-)
I love it when you get the blame for what I do.
You aren't exactly of the hook there JP. >.>
(dagger eyes in your general direction)
Hey, don't be upset with me - I agree with Poppa that you would do quite well in a gentleman's club. You might have to abandon the Lucy persona and go with something a little more Veronica-ish or Betty-ish, but...
Fine...next time you get <.< then!
When she posted that she had a different gravatar, it was Lucy with a big grin. I thought it was just 2 arrows pointing to that pic. I didn't know that >.> was dagger eyes.
Look at drb's post right above your yummmmmmmm post
What dagger eyes?
I give you dagger eyes and you say "Yum"?
YUMMMMMM.
>.>
OK, you're not that kind of girl in public, but how about in private? :-D
I am totally staying out of this conversation!
You're not helping yourself (from my point of view anyway) I'm not that kind of girl!
I know you too well
LOL!
These aren't just women, these are very classy, intelligent, sophisticated ladies - great job! They could join my club any day, well, if I had a club...
"if I had a club...." If I had a club they would want to join.
