Backlash! After six years of increasingly dysfunctional leftwing rule, conservatives swept into power today in Australia in a landslide victory. They promise to cut income taxes, end the wildly unpopular Global Warming tax on carbon, and crack down on illegal immigrants. Gee, sounds familiar.

Sadly it will never happen here, their are too many people on the dole, who will vote for more free stuff.
Plus, the corrupt 2 party system will keep any competent third party out of nomination. We saw it happen last election.

That's great news. Hopefully, it will at least slow the decline.
Excuse me for being a bit cynical, but here's my prediction of how that will go:
1. Conservatives come in and start making changes.
2. In anticipation of things getting better, the markets start rising.
3. Things actually start getting better.
4. Meanwhile, the press is ripping the conservatives agenda, yammering about people left dying in the street, doing news features on some one person who is "left behind", throwing dire-soundig apples-to-oranges statistics out without any comparisons with the past.
5. They bring out very learned talking heads who make dire predictions about the future. They tell Australians that things are as bad as they've ever been, and getting worse.
6. Good-hearted but ignorant low information voters who are doing well begin to feel guilty that others are doing so badly.
7. The next batch of conservative candidates include a bunch of guys who are also buying into the media bullshit, and they start campaiging on a mamby-pamby platform of change and compassion.
8. Because their platform is so spineless, they lose and a wave of libs claiming to be middle-of-the-road are voted in. The guilty feeling conservatives voted for them, and of course the libs voted for them because they know they're lying to get elected.
9. The libs immediately beging to dismantle the conservatives' changes.
10. Due to momentum, the economy continues to do well, then okay. By the tiem the lib's changes kick in and things really go south, everyone is swallowing the libs' lines that the reason things are so bad is because the conservatives made them bad (see #4-5 - it was the worst times ever), and the libs need a second, third, fourth, etc. term to make them right.
Does that sound familiar?
Maybe we could speed up the process by sending Quagmire, RP, and Crowley there.
Put Ron Paul in charge, everyone gets their gold back, everything is fine.

I had the chance to work with some Down Syndrome kids this weekend, taking them for rides on my rocking horses. They were lots of fun, and infinitely smarter than Crowley.

When true Conservatives clean the mess up, people get complacent and itchy for less moral restrictions on behaviors and go back to the liberal mindset. Then when things go to hell it is the Conservatives fault. That is just how it is. Some people are just made to do the work and get no thanks for it.
You are right Andre. If you want to stop the control freaks you need to do like Egypt, band the problem causing party and persecute the members for their excess. There is certainly a shitload of evidence of extraconstitutional activity, particularly wiht O himself and at DOJ, to warrant such an approach. But we have no real opposition. Boehner, McCain? Pleeeze.

But despite my cynicism, I will always hold out hope that somehow, some way, it will be different and conservatives/libertarians will gain the upper hand. Maybe the victorious Aussies will learn from Newt's conservative revolution's mistakes.
They have to realize some important factors in the ongoing battle:
Currently, the lib fascisti are defining the debate. The primary weapon is the "everybody knows" factoids such as "conservatives are against women/gays/people of color/etc.", conservatives are evil businessmen [who are willing to kill all their customers in order to make a bigger profit - hey, no one ever could accuse the fascisti of successfully employing logic]", and of course the big one in one form or another - the economy is a zero-sum game.
And another one, to quote Dennis Prager - "the left never stops". Whenever they lose, they just morph into something else. Well, not really anything else - they just change labels and mantras. But they are like a Terminator - sent on a mission to destroy anything that even remotely resembles civilization and/or culture, any vestige of liberty, any and all success.
All we need is a couple of million people (in the US - probably a quarter to a half mil in Australia) to finally recognize that Mussolini, Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Napoleon, Castro, Pol Pot, Obmana, Hilary, Abie Hoffman, H. Rap Brown, etc. are all from the same political party.

Now if this will only happen in this country. Ever where left ideas are tried, people find out that they are so full of BS and false promises. The only thing that happens is that the populace becomes poorer from all of the "free" stuff.

Well in fairness to the U.S., it took Australia six years to realize their error. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi took over Congress in January 2007 but Obama didn't take over the White House until January 2009... so we haven't quite had as much time to wise up.
Good point but I suspect that the undertow of stupidity is far stronger here.
