Whether Bernie is a socialist or not is a matter of semantics.
If you believe that being a socialist means you fight for the rights and well-being of the working class, trying to prevent their exploitation by those who hold the capital, then no, Bernie is not a socialist.
If you've correctly observed that being a socialist means fighting to put the working class troglodytes in their place - that being "outside the moat" - keeping the space of your higher-evolved beingness free from pollution by said troglodytes, free to enjoy the finer things in life without actually producing anything of value to earn them, then Bernie is absolutely a socialist.
