My old buddy, who did two tours Marine Force Recon in 'Nam, then returned to be on the Orange County, CA, swat team, always told me, "If you're going to a fist fight, bring a knife. Ya know, I just don't like the notion of a 5 shooter. If 6 was good enough for the Colt model 1873 SAA, it should be good enough for S&W's modern hand-cannons.
Actually, the SAA was typically loaded with only 5 rounds because it wasn't a good idea having a fixed firing pin hammer resting on a primed case. The 1st notch [~1/8" off the primer] couldn't be trusted.

NOT disputing, always knew keeping 1 chamber empty was just a good idea, however I am a fanatic about about useless historical lore and would like to read more.

Please note, the empty chamber is not necessary on more modern "transfer bar" firing pin configurations like Ruger, Taurus, S&W, etc.

They had to make them 5 shooters because 6 would weaken the cylinder to the point of possibly exploding. Otherwise they would have to drastically increase the size of the frame and cylinder to handle the pressure of the cartridge. Remember, the 1873 was still black powder, and didn't have the pressures of modern smokeless powder.
Good point. If increasing the size of the frame and cylinder is what it took, I'm surprised they didn't do so. SOMEBODY would buy a revolver that weighs as much as a Garand or Thompson, just to say they have one. Look at the guy who custom-built a revolver in .600 Nitro. I believe it was called the Pfeiffer-Zeliska.

You won't win a quick-draw contest with that - the barrel will take too long to clear the holster.
unless, and i can't find one but i recall reading about them as a youth, a pivot holster would do the trick. it was on a ball and socket mechanism. hip holster.

While it's a nice example of hand cannon, Ammo availability might be an issue however if you want to shoot .460 rounds. For 1/2 the money you could get a Taurus Judge that shoots .410 and 45 Colt rounds.

I can't imagine having ANY kind of reasonable control over that thing in a tense situation. Like the header says, I think your best chance with that is just that a bad guy is gonna have a coronary on the spot just seeing that.

Seriously, if I've got a man-sized issue in the downstairs hallway at 3 in the AM, I think I'd feel better with my .22 Mag revolver than that beast. I know I can put one of those messengers right in the forehead.
Once at the indoor range, I was next to a guy with the SW .50 cal. He let one of those loose, and OMG I felt the shock wave reverberating right through the plexiglass partition.
I think it's intended for outdoors, not home defense. I could be wrong. When you're outdoors in bear country and don't want the inconvenience of having a long gun slung over your shoulder - say you're panning for gold in a river - it's nice to have a short gun that will make a bear go ouch and stop and think. Or least make the bear nervous with its noise.
Well, yeah, I think it is really meant for a niche like that ... but still ... If you're outdoors in bear country and don't want the inconvenience of a long gun . . . I don't think you should BE outdoors in bear country!!

Yeah, well, it's probably hard to chop wood while holding a rifle. So when the grizzly comes in to make a point, you can either hit him with the axe and piss him off more than he already was, or you can run for your rifle that's probably leaning against a tree too far away, or you can pull this little beauty and blow his nose off. Personally, I vote for blowing his nose off so after he kills me they can identify the bastard and kill him.
Interesting thing about bears here in Michigan is they're back in the Lower Peninsula. I don't know how that happens. Last year I actually called my older daughter at 11:00 PM to let her know a black bear was sighted within about a 1/4 mile of her house, so she shouldn't let the kids walk to school alone in the morning. And we live way down in the Grand Rapids area - the bears are supposed to be confined to the Upper Peninsula. What did they do, walk across the Mackinac Bridge? If so, where did the get the money for the toll?

I was working in the advance crew, clearing and building access roads, for Seven Oaks Dam in the San Bernardino mountains. Bears were everywhere, and I was the guy on the ground directing the operations.
The guy in charge for the Army Corps of Engineers, (a different kind of corpseman), told me I should carry my 9mm Glock for protection. Yeah, that's what I need. Pissed off bears to deal with.

He was right, the Glock is handy around black bears because you never know when trouble is bruin.
Sorry, if I was in a bear area, I wouldn't carry anything less than a .357 Mag. That is bearly enough to make me feel safe.

There was a bear spotted down on Cape Cod last year or the before, then tracked all the way up the coast toward Boston, then inland. Cape Cod is physically separated from the mainland by the Canal (technically its an island now). The Canal is about 5 or 6 hundred feet across and gets a helluva current going in it, so bears can swim at least that much.
I have a little .22LR Iver Johnson (looks like a small Walther PPK) makes a good pocket gun. It's actually accurate, never jams, 1st shot is double action. I can keep it on standard target at 20 yards. 7 of those in the face would slow someone down.
